Does it need to be portable? Lab type heatsinks like one i purchased from mike here on the forums and pictured below are usually cheap and larger than portables. I mean you could make a lab heatsink portable with a battery pack i guess but i usually use mine with an adjustable lab psu so not so...

If you go with uni-t make sure its either the 61e or another well researched model. As I was warned on eevblog that while the 61e is an amazing meter for the money(it is true rms, and very accurate and feature rich) that the other models can be VERY bad even other models in the 61x series...

what do you want to use it for?

I asked this question recently on EEVblog. I was steered towards the uni-t 61e($60) and the Brymen BM-257($120) Basically the uni-t has much higher counts, great accuracy, but no backlight, and sub standard safety(don't use for mains work) But im sure would be more than good for bench work...

This is the problem, it would take me a few months to save up for it. And I'll have the host long before I would be able to save up for the diode. Might just throw a temporary m140 in it :)

Its 18650 or 2x18350 or 2x16340, so should run any driver/diode. Its rough same length as c6/501b but thicker with much thicker solid copper walls and finning, will cool very well.

I completely agree only my 660nm red doesn't ruin my night vision.

As mentioned illumination supply is reliable, also DTR lasers is very reliable. so you can order drivers now. and welcome to the forums ill +rep you some to get you started.

$40 for custom is cutting it close, sinner has some nice ones in the 60$ range though.
