What is harvest-worthy from an old CRT monitor?

I have a few dead CRT monitors that I'd like to take apart. Mainly, just to see what's inside them (I've never seen the guts of one before). But also, to hopefully harvest whatever is usable from them. So, what should I keep, and what's junk? What do you guys/girls get out of CRT monitors...

    DIY Homemade laser diode driver

OK, I'm ready to get my components for building my first DDL driver, and I wanted to run my list and thought-process by everyone here so I can be sure I'm thinking clearly and not missing anything important. This driver will be for DVD burner/reader LD's (red). And I'm not worried how big it...

    Tiger's text messages LOL *NSFW*

Most people have two sides to them: A public side, and a private side. It's usually bad news when they mix, especially with celebrities, since their "fans" or sponsors can screw them, too.

    Laser pest control?

Yes. Exactly. That would be the exact reason, and the truth. Nothing wrong with telling someone that. But yet you BOTH are adults, right? Just because he's your big brother doesn't mean you can't speak to him like an adult about an adult subject (safety and legal consequences), demand your...

    Anyone else into homemade Ballistics\Pyrotechnics?

you know, the more I read in this thread, the more I think that this is another subject that probably shouldn't be discussed on a public internet forum. In most places on Earth, making explosive devices at home is illegal, as well as detonating them in public. Other "projects" people describe...

Components Source: from old computer parts?

I was disassembling an old Pentium III POS computer with a dead PSU last night when it hit me: I see all these capacitors and resistors on the boards from modems, network cards, power supply units, old school VGA boards, even the motherboard.... Does anyone else desolder these components...

DVD "reader vs burner" and "speed" questions

Oh, my bad. I guess I didn't read that carefully enough. :yabbem: Now, THAT makes more sense!

DVD "reader vs burner" and "speed" questions

I realize that the parts are salvageable from other things, and relatively cheap. I just don't have the time or money to devote to it right now. I'm having enough trouble making all the bills each month despite working two jobs. Free time at home after work isn't on my side right now. I have...

DVD "reader vs burner" and "speed" questions

Thanks for the encouragement! I will experiment, once I actually have the time (and money) to build a few DDL drivers! I am always on the lookout for DVD drives laying around....

DVD "reader vs burner" and "speed" questions

A 5 mW pointer from a DVD reader sounds just fine to me. Would any of the readers only give you 5mW, or could some be a little more (like 10mW)? That was the foundation of my previous question regarding speed. I'm curious if anyone has ever done a comparison or tests to determine what power of...

DVD "reader vs burner" and "speed" questions

Oh, so CD's use IR, and DVD's use red? That's what I thought, but what do I know? LOL. Would the LD from read-only DVD drives be worthwhile to harvest? What sort of mW could one expect? Again, I'm not interested in a burning laser from the harvest. But I'd like to be able to at least see the...

DVD "reader vs burner" and "speed" questions

Oh, really? I thought only CD drives used IR and DVD drives used all red. :yabbem: So, is it safe to say that any kind of reader is IR? Well, except for BluRay I guess?

DVD "reader vs burner" and "speed" questions

If this was already covered somewhere, then please accept my apologies and label me a n00b (which I already know I am) and spam me with "use the search" function (which I did but wasn't seeing this exact subject off-hand). ;) I'm curious as to what the difference is between a DVD burner and a...

Do you carry your laser as self defense at night?

I used to think it wasn't too dangerous... Until two punks snuck up behind me one evening, jammed a gun into my ribs, and demanded my money. During a brief "chat" about how I didn't have any money, I drew my gun and shot the closest one in the chest. They both ran off. All this in my own f--king...

    The Gun Show

I'm from the government. All your firearms lists have been inventoried from this public internet post. Please wait for an ATF agent to come to your door and confiscate your collections.... OK, j/k... (well, partially anyway). That's a nice gun you got there, pullbangdead! Very nice...

Do you carry your laser as self defense at night?

I really can't see a laser being used effectively for self-defense. How you'd stabilize your hand to shine it into someone's eyes quickly to blind them is beyond me.... I'm hoping you're talking about Countries other than the USA. Last time I checked, law-abiding citizens were able to own guns...
