    FEELER: Plasma Speaker Kits

Awesome :D Cardboard PCB's are awesome, I remember I built a laser driver on one once :D

Game: Guess the mystery object !

12P12C connector? Not sure if it has a RJ designation?

    ANOTHER tornado machine :D

Not bad for the first one :D If you can somehow make the base flat it'll help a lot. Like put a bit of plastic over the container with holes in it for the fog to come through. I've been trying to sort out the lighting on mine, went and bought a couple 35W halogen downlights and put those in...

    ANOTHER tornado machine :D

It is a fair bit just in raw materials cost and paint alone, also the blower fans add up when I need 6 of them! I'd estimate about $120 in paint (because I screwed up a few times), maybe $80 in wood, $50 in pipe, $150 for the blower fans, and rest of the electronics I already had, but if you had...

    ANOTHER tornado machine :D

Done a fair bit of painful painting work on this over the last week, but it's come out pretty good :D Only real concern I have is that the fog plate is also made from MDF .. and the fog being purely water vapour, it'll literally be dripping wet. I've given it a few coats of sealer, then primer...

    Growth of Laser Technology

Not sure, but laser-based projectors _may_ fit into that communications category. Cool graphic though.

How does heat shorten laser life?

^ this. You can't really expect to overdrive something as much as we do and get the full lifetime out of it .. rated current exists for a reason.

CPU heatsink for 100W LED panel?

Surprised they don't even list it's dissipation capacity in the specs. Pretty important detail for a heatsink you'd think.

    Point and shot laser

445nm has the the best price/power ratio. It is possible to do what you're saying, however as far as I'm aware no one has done such a thing yet. It could however be quite dangerous, ie someone picking it up and seeing it's not all that bright, then copping it full power in the face. You'd have...

    Laser price change over time?

All lasers have become cheaper over time. Even the 445nm diodes would have cost you upwards of $2000 for an engineering sample. Then someone discovered them in projectors and they were going for about $500 on eBay, now you can pick them up for <$100. Unfortunately I don't think anyone has been...

    ANOTHER tornado machine :D

Should be fine, the pipes in mine are only 50mm. You can also just use 1 pipe if you enclose most of it in a cylinder :) Any of those fans should work. It's really not that picky about the actual airflow, just the design. A 5 ring ultrasonic fogger is probably way overkill, I've used just a...

    ANOTHER tornado machine :D

Yeah, I can just sit there and stare at it for hours. Can't wait till I can get it all completed and painted :)

Party project with lasers, concerns about most adequate lasers to use

If you are going to be removing the modules from the hosts anyway, most drivers have a potentiometer on them you could probably tweak to bring it down to 5mW. Since you're planning on controlling them remotely, I gather you have a bit of electronics design background, so alternatively design...

    ANOTHER tornado machine :D

Yep :) Originally the plan was to have the main fan pressurize the box enough to feed the pipes, it worked OK but you couldn't turn it up very far before the fan started leaking air out the front. They're not great with backpressure. I have 6 DC blower fans up there instead :) A few more pics...

Saw a tank on the back of a truck today

Ever seen a truck being airlifted by a helicopter over your house? Now THAT is strange :D It was most likely on a truck because driving a tank around on a public road is probably illegal, they also consume a shitload of fuel, are relatively slow, and usually tear up whatever surface they drive...

Apparently most lasers don't have polarity protection *SOLVED*

Re: Apparently th Sci-Fi Lasers 501B doesn't have polarity protection For the amount of power wasted, I'd prefer drivers without.

    Anyone familiar with Attiny13 programming?

You know how an array works, yeah? Remember arrays are always 0 indexed in Arduino. boolean arrayName [3] = {1,0,1}; // Creates a boolean array containing [3] values digitalWrite(Pin, arrayName[0]); // This would turn the pin on (array index 0 is = 1) digitalWrite(pin, arrayName[1]); // This...

    ANOTHER tornado machine :D

I've made so many of these in the past, all different shapes and sizes, but I felt like making another one - this time larger, but also fully exposed on all sides (although it's very hard to see without a dark backdrop). This one stands a bit over 2 metres tall, about 1 metre "diameter". It's...
