PERMANENT THREAD: Ebay& other internet FINDS of interest- read all the OP please sub

Re: PERMANENT THREAD: Ebay& other internet FINDS of interest- read all the OP please The thing with DTR's diodes is that you know you'll be getting a bona fide 1000mW NDG7475T laser for your $335, not some NDG700 passed off as a NDG7475T. That said, the price of the "NDG7475T" on some of those...

    Gold AR coating? Wavelength?

Normally I'd expect yellow to be for shorter wavelength like 445nm, but that may work fine for green too. Maybe they don't have any broadband coatings, and so they're just using the coating made for shorter wavelengths.

    Was this a good purchase?

It's not a great laser for the price, but you'll probably be happy with what you got. Just shop around next time.

    Recommended Eye Wear

For a while, my collection of laser safety goggles cost me more than the lasers themselves! Eyes are priceless!

    Highest suggested output for diodes?

The 5mW red should probably be left where it is, but maybe you can push it to 10mW if you really want. It's kind of underwhelming though. The green should not be pot-modded, because it's probably already near its limits already and it rarely makes much difference anyway in terms of brightness.

Converging a beam to a small point?

Technically yes, but you'll also have to choose the right lenses that will give you the needed spot sizes, etc. That's beyond my expertise, but you can read up on it on sites like this.

    Kryton Groove tailswitch shenanigans

In addition to the above, your Groove might also be anodized, which reduces the conductivity. Get some metal brushes and brush down the threads and contacts. I found that helped a bit. Some people have gone through the trouble of drilling out the aluminum and screwing into it to create a...

The proper effective cheap safety glasses

Yeah, even though you're protected if it's below 5mW, it's not by much. For green lasers especially you want a pretty high OD rating because of the eye's sensitivity to the wavelength. Those ARG goggles have like OD6-7 or something, and the dot is still pretty visible. For red, it doesn't...

Converging a beam to a small point?

Yes, you just need a lens, preferably a more precision lens. You can see what Surplus Shed has (look for plano-convex), or see what Newport, Thorlabs, or Edmund's Optics has (more expensive). The real challenge is keeping both the lens, laser, and subject the perfect distance apart. For that...

Adding a simple laser pointer to an existing project of mine...

Hey PastorGordon, though I don't do anything with colloidal silver, I've seen how people use lasers for inspecting the silver content of the water they're producing. You don't need anything more than a simple pre-wired laser module for your colloidal silver. Anything more and you might blind...

Can police confiscate my laser? Yes!

They may not even be trying to pin something on you either. You could be the victim of conflicting testimony with someone else, or circumstantial evidence, mistakes, or just the overall effort involved with having to prove innocence. You could just say something that gives the cop an excuse to...

The proper effective cheap safety glasses

The important thing is to certify that your goggles can indeed protect your eyes. This can either be from certification organizations or reputable manufacturers, or by measuring the filters directly using a meter -- self-certification. Otherwise you're just taking the seller's word for...

    WTB: Variable Power Supply

You could try building your own power supply too. Plus, that site is out of Australia. You might also just bite the bullet and get a decent power supply from eBay shipped from the US. Yeah, it may cost a bit in shipping, but often you'll be saving a bit on those older used PSUs or investing...

    DYI Grow Light Help

I remember reading that a lot of grow lights use much more common and cheaper 635nm red LEDs, and that plants usually want the ~650-660nm variant that are more expensive. Seeing that red lasers are in the 650-660nm range, I thought that might be a suitable way to supply that wavelength if you...

Can police confiscate my laser? Yes!

That is total bullshit. I do have to say something though: the main mistake your father made was talking to cops in the first place. It is a hard lesson. Don't answer any questions you don't have to. Ever. Nothing you say can or will be used in your defense. Don't tell the cop what the...

Feasibility of Destructive High-Wattage Laser Arrays

I agree that a CO2 laser or something actually made for cutting/burning would be a better choice, but cooling one of those diode arrays isn't that unrealistic. Those laser projectors are already cooling off their high-powered arrays with just fans and heatsinks. Tripling that up would be about...

    'SCAM' WARNING- By POO Pal

A follow-up to this: it looks like the Feds agree that PayPal was deceiving customers with their credit scam and fined them $25M.

The cost of having a lens AR coated $$$

That's actually not all that bad a price for 25-pieces. Too bad there aren't any combined bulk AR-coating sites like there are for PCBs. You might see if your local eyeglass company could put an AR coating on your lenses. I don't know how much they'd charge for that though.

    Get Some Safety Goggles Now!

The equation is: I_out = I_in * 10^{-x} where Iin is the input power, Iout is the output power, and x is the OD. OD 4 --> 10^-4 = 0.0001. I_in = 1W --> I_out = 0.1mW For green lasers, the OD of goggles such as ARG-type goggles may seem really high (OD7), but it makes it a lot easier to work...

    is it really worth it?

They're not fun at all. Lasers suck, especially the blue ones.
