Can you take a picture of the whole setup ? Without knowing the cause you may have the same problem next time. By example you could put the driver in reverse in the build.

If you can open the host then replacing the diode is a piece of cake. The Skylasers are glued together. Taken it apart is the hardest part.

You can burn paper with 1Watt laser. Focus the dot to a tiny point and make circular motion around the first burn mark. The blackened edge will absorb the heat much better and accelerate the burning of the paper. Also some paper are easier to burn than others. You have to try various papers to...
