    Military laser weapons

That would make thing heavier and less moveable (speed, range). Also it would make them better recognizable in air.

    Laser to detect plastic/alloy materials

I see done it in a very complicated way LOL Recognize something what is not a natural thing (a garbage) by image processes acquired by satellites. Then send a helicopter with a powerful laser to shoot and do a breakdown spectroscopy. Figure out that it was a degradable paper, recall back all...

Laser for low tech communication- testing laser power

You should use < sign, meaning less than (bellow) 1 mW. With > you are in the next class. Maybe some nearby school/college/university would help you to measure precisely your lasers.

    Powell lens and power reduction?

 I might imagine the cube of light of those dimensions but it would be good to see a picture what you really need. Do you really need a collimated sheet? Would a cylindrical lens be enough instead of the Powell lens?

    Post your random pics!

I used three types - ruby, diamond, and carbide. The most inconvenient was with the diamond - the edge is short. I did not feel that carbide was sharp enough. Ruby is fine when it's new and hasn't chipped. Red color stands out on a fiber. Thus you're working not just on a feeling but with eyes...

What camera do you use? IR 9xx shall not be visible for an eye even at 20W.

PERMANENT THREAD: Ebay& other internet FINDS of interest- read all the OP please sub

Re: PERMANENT THREAD: Ebay& other internet FINDS of interest- read all the OP please A great book. Hope there still will be a new edition, the last one was 10 years ago.

PERMANENT THREAD: Ebay& other internet FINDS of interest- read all the OP please sub

Re: PERMANENT THREAD: Ebay& other internet FINDS of interest- read all the OP please You are getting into a real engineering. After figuring out flash lamps (do they still produce and sell them?) and its power supply, you'll need to build a cooling system. That will be really cool :whistle...

PERMANENT THREAD: Ebay& other internet FINDS of interest- read all the OP please sub

Re: PERMANENT THREAD: Ebay& other internet FINDS of interest- read all the OP please IRC, more energy per pulse from these glass at low repetition rate. Probably to create YAG of that size would be expensive too.

    Laser experiment

Don't worry. Your question/problem is a multi-$$$$ problem - military wants to get the same answer too. States and Soviets had big projects on developing lasers to shoot big boys balloons (rockets). Still the work is in progress. To me it looks that they went after energy than wavelength.

    Laser experiment

For an "ideal" Gaussian beam it will be impossible to match both those parameters over the whole distance - the divergence is wavelength dependent You'll need to choose the same divergence or the same beam spot size at a certain distance. In a non ideal case more complications - M2, laser diode...

On Getting Good Results From Diffraction-Grating DIY Spectrometers

The groove spacing is great in formula, but diffraction gratings are specified by numbers of grooves in mm (300, 600 etc). The computer can do the math.

    Yellow laser crystals

You'll need some luck to find not $$$ crystals for the project too.

On Getting Good Results From Diffraction-Grating DIY Spectrometers

You can use higher order spots and do statistics for your measurements.

Affordable Adjustable Lab Laser Diode Power Supply

I think this one has advantage of the current limit, and voltage would adjust accordingly (current supply; CC). Not like with PSU 12V output to fry diodes (voltage supply; CV)

Affordable Adjustable Lab Laser Diode Power Supply

I assume then anything after "although" could be omitted.

    large beam expander?

That will hold only with $$$$. A one big lens with short focus shall be really good not to spoil divergence. Otherwise photography lenses would have no professional grade

Affordable Adjustable Lab Laser Diode Power Supply

I assume there will be some smoke if you connect a LD directly to ATX. (or you mean something different in underline text?)

aspheric lens optimized to collimate Nichia’s blue laser diode?

For blue lds. Circulight - it is great on paper. As I see it was removed from the catalog too. All LP lenses http://www.lightpath.com/product/asphere/

aspheric lens optimized to collimate Nichia’s blue laser diode?

iirc, the discussed lens was replaced by other. Read the newer LP catalog.
