Most BR diodes show a big fat bar when unfocused or with no lens. Same as red diodes. This is likely to be just a freak PHR or a diode that was picked up at short notice, and cheap, that fullfilled the requirements for production. With higher output diodes becoming available at much cheaper...

I don't think they would address the fast and slow axes individually here. There's no point for them to correct the beam as it's only really being used as a light source and put through a diffuser anyway. It would be nice to see if they have a better single lens in front of the diode itself...
