My 532nm O-Like 200mw is currently in the TEM22 mode. I am wandering what this could mean. I am suspicious of the battery, but do different modes indicate different "problems"?

Thanks for the help!

Use the Search bar, It is your friend.

This is the Profile of the Beam/Or/Beams coming out of your laser

Mode shift could indicate any number of problems. I'll list a few reasons a DPSS laser could mode shift:

Insufficient pump power due to:

  • Low batteries
  • Faulty driver
  • Poor electrical contact
  • Dead/dying diode
Instability due to:

  • Excess or not enough heat
  • Crappy crystals
  • Insufficient pump power

You can troubleshoot some of these and locate the issue.

  • Try new batteries
  • Measure the current draw with a digital multimeter
  • Check electrical continuity through switches and the body
  • Try warmer or cooler start-up temperature

Addendum: Sometimes lasers just like to operate in modes other than TEM22 due to the cavity design. If it is not mode "shifting" and the laser is stable and up to spec then I wouldn't worry about it since there is nothing you can do short of tearing it apart and rebuilding it.
