Super Beast Green






I got my superbeast and tried it with some cr123a li-ions. Its bright but next to my $5 overspec geenies its only a bit brighter when it actually warms up.

Not a bad deal for $20 but I wouldnt call it "super"

I could easily have just gotten a low spec unit though...

Mine blows away my$ 5 overspec greens at over 75mw
 
I suppose I should start looking for a set of 3.7v rechargeables on ebay. Are the generic ones fine?
 
Ultrafire is a knockoff of surefire already so I'd be surprised if someone is selling a knockoff of a knockoff.

I bought 2 batteries and a dual charger off ebay for some ridiculous price like $8 shipped and they work great. They are even a brand that I have read good reviews of although I can't remember the name at the moment.


These applications don't require extreme drain like a 1W 445 so almost any li-ion will do the job.

I've been playing with these for a few days now and my initial impression is good. I unscrewed the front cap and the laser module looks similar if not identical to the Super Beast 006. I will have full reviews of these units up this weekend.

Excellent find td1042k. If I had to guess.. I would bet that this is more than just a pot mod. Though, I looked at the bare green modules that he sells and they don't look the same as the ones in the Super Beast 005 and 006.. so who knows. Any way.. I await your feedback.
 
I did receive my regular super beast today, and I am pretty impressed with it so far. The cr123 cell it came with was junk, but luckily i had a couple new duracell batteries in my junk drawer.
 
I sent back SB #2 today ... while #1 would run forever at what appears to be full power (sigh -- no LPM ... sigh), #2 would run for ~60 seconds then taper down to nil between 61s and 180s. This was repeatable with every battery I have, so was not a battery issue. Strangely, it was also consistently repeatable sequentially -- after a 2-5 min rest, it would be at full-power and then taper to nil by second #180 ... VERY consistent.

I emailed the seller; he was IMMEDIATELY responsive. I asked if I could just trade the dud for a #100 + the cost-differential, and he said sure.

Too bad it cost $5.65 to send back (maybe he'll cut me some slack on the $9 becasue of it?), but we'll see what the #100 looks like, eh? ;)
 
for $18 id say the duty cycle should only be 20 seconds! anymore than that is just a bonus!


I hardly ever have a laser on for more than 15 seconds at a time. You turn it on and say "oooh ahhh" and then turn it off. You dont turn it on and then go make diner....

I do see your point, and understand heat / power impact on a semiconductor. I am also thinking of adding some additional heat-compound to the grooves of the front of the host, since it apepars to be part of the heat dissipation.

In all fairness, when holding the two lasers side-by-side, SB#1 is brighter & tighter in all respects, and SB#2 starts to visibly dim in ~60 seconds. There is clearly something different about the two.

I emailed the seller, and discussed it with him -- he agreed that the dimming-after-60-seconds was not desirable, and offered to replace it. I do need to ask him what the expected duty cycle should be for these, especially the #100, which I expect will be less than what I have today (#50?) .

SB #1 has run approaching 8 minutes with no dimishing in beam and no real heat build-up. The only reason I stopped is that the hold-on button is a killer to my thumb after that long :D A click-on button replacement would be a great upgrade ...

Today, there are many lasers that are being advertised with "continuous" duty cycles; whether that is reasonable or not, we should hold them to it; after all, it is by stressing the standard that we grow beyond it, right?

Some "oooh, ahhh"s just take longer ... When trying to hit the XBOX 360 on just the right curve to get the line cast across the whole living room wall for example, or when plumbing the depths of the swimming pool, etc.

Well I did order a set of generic 3.7v cr123 rechargeables, 4 batteries and a charger for 10.39 shipped. I would think they would work just fine for an application such as this. Hopefully i can make the two new duracell batteries i have last until they come.

The only issue i had with my SB was getting the beam focus right, as the piece was a little loose when i got it. I just laid a thin layer of red RTV silicone on the threads and screwed it back in and refocused the beam. All is good now. I also ground off the nipple on the tail cap so i dont have the pesky lanyard on there anymore.

Super Beast update; I still don't have an LPM :( but it is snowing now, and I have been testing the beam out to the clouds (yes, the little "<5mw" guy is clearly visible out quite a distance). Note: made sure there were no airplanes, etc.

Also, on an internal note, I took the 20mm focal length eyepiece from an old Celestron telescope (which the heatsink of the SB just happens to fit inside exactly), & the little guy burns black electrical tape at (go figure) 20mm ... starts smoking instantly. It has not cut through completely yet though ...
 
Got my #100 today. The beam is definitely about twice as bright as the regular sb using duracell batteries in each. I am very impressed for a sub 30 dollar laser. The sticker on the unit even says 100mW on it
