Portable Lasers as a Defensive/Offensive Weapon

OK I know some here are gonna hate me for bringing up the subject but I still wanted to get other's thoughts on this.

Lasers have always had an inherent safety margin due to their nature, but as the Arctic Spyder III and other lasers have recently been "released" this has become something greater to consider as more and more common folk with no real experience with lasers beyond a $5 red laser and a kitten gain access to high powered lasers.

Now, to the point, I bring up defensive first simply because I don't feel that these are powerful enough to be used as an offensive weapon commonly. Consider this scenario...

You own a high powered laser and someone breaks into your house to cause some sort of harm. You do not own a gun, but you know what your laser can do. Assuming you have some level of aim in such a situation, you might chose to use the laser to blind your assailant to prevent any action. Maybe the attacker starts thrashing or won't leave at this point, then you could attempt to use the laser's ability to burn skin to try and get the assailant to leave. This incident shows that your laser could act as a potential non-lethal deterrent. Of course there are 5 billion ways this could go horribly wrong, but you encounter the same issues with any break in/weapon scenario.

Now offensively you could use the same two characteristics of the laser to do some level of harm to someone, but I dunno how effective this would be at the 500mW to 1W level. I guess both instances have about the same shock effect. Question is how many people would consider using a laser over a gun or taser.

Of course because this is now an honest consideration for anyone, I do think that the powers that be are becoming more aware of the potential uses of such a device. I think the media attention is a good thing because the public can then begin to formulate approaches to how best to deal with this. I think that at some point these high powered PORTABLE lasers will be classified as a weapon and regulated as such. I know that enthusiasts will not like this, but I can't imagine anyone thinking that the current status of lasers would remain as is.

What does everyone else think?

You can use 10-20mW of unfocused 532nm to flashblind someone. Using the Arctic as a defensive weapon wouldn't work, it would be deemed unnecessary force and probably land you in a heap of trouble. There's no need to burn someone with the laser. Trust me, 5mW of 532 in the eye is a very, very unpleasant experience.

True. Didn't you blind a mugger with your Evolution Pro some time ago, ranged?

I dunno if it would get you in trouble, seeing as it is perfectly legal to use a gun to defend yourself in a home invasion (at least it is in most locations in the US sans a few municipalities). The gun can kill a man, the laser would not. I agree that lower powered lasers would probably be better for defensive means if you want only a temporary impact on the attacker.

A laser as a defensive weapon is just plain stupid. If someone breaks into my house they will not leave alive. Simple as that. In Michigan we have what's called a castle doctrine. If they break into my home I have every right to use deadly force. Im not gonna sit there like some nerd and try to aim a laser in their eye while they have a knife or a gun. Can you imagine how bad you will blind yourself but firing up an arctic in a dark house after you have been asleep for a few hours? My suggestion is to buy a gun and keep it in a safe in your house. You can buy a decent used revolver for a few hundred, and a safe for another $100. Or if you really want good self defense buy a shotgun and keep it loaded with buckshot. You barely need to aim and you would could easily kill an intruder. If you ever come into a situation like this, it's always best to use deadly force, because there is no one to testify against you.

And if you don't have a gun? Then what? I'd use whatever I have at my disposal to put a home invader down. You make a good point on the issue of possibly blinding yourself though with the higher power stuff.

bettet using a tactical led light to temporarily blind the intruder than swat him with a bat or bottle. looks better for you in court.

Was a p7, i had my evo with me tho. i did not grab my evo pro because, if it would have failed i would have some kind of mass to hit the mob... its an heavy flashlight and very sturdy.

I would have used lasers if they ran away...like they are in a car or something.

<Ranged>: everyone knew that i was mugged?
<Ranged>: last night
<Proto>: WHAT?!?!
<Proto>: I didn't know
<Ranged>: result= temporally bliness for the attacker
<Ranged>: THANKS DX
<gamegenie>: xDDD
<Ranged>: ^^ P7 flashlight
<gamegenie>: I <3 you man
<gamegenie>: thats awesome
<gamegenie>: xDDD
<Proto>: Sweet
<Ranged>: i had knife, 50mW ir less laser, and my 150mw from WL
<Ranged>: evo pro
<Ranged>: but i had forgotten lasers goggles
<Proto>: Pics or it didn't happen >_>
<gamegenie>: omg
<Ranged>: the guy just had stolen a b ike
<gamegenie>: this post gets in my hall of fame

i think a laser for defensive use would be more of a liability than anything.

Just no.....
1-If you permanently blind the intruder and don't kill him he'll probably end up suing you or something retarded.
2-You'll probably flashblind yourself at the same time.
3-If you miss his eyes and he has a gun you're dead.
4-You'd probably be better off with a HID flashlight to daze him and then run away and call the cops.
5-If you're that worried about robbers then get a gun already. They're like $100. If you can't get a gun then get a taser, hunting crossbow, bat, or whatever proper weapon you'd like.

Lasers can be used as a defensive weapon, but they're really not designed for or recommended for it. A laser would work best in an oudoors situation where the attacker is running up to you or you catch him by surprise. Just hit him in the face with your 445nm or w/e and I guarantee he'll stop running after you.

With 1Watt? seems like a little much..
