I did a test with an acrylic lens at 12ft 3in away, with the standard AIXIZ acrylic lens at 900mA.

Alone, it makes a ~1cm straight line on electrical tape. Given a few seconds, it smokes. So, to increase this I stuck a lens 4" from the electrical tape that made a solid needle prick dot. Smoked good. Yet I had better performance 3" from the diode, it still did an ok job...After all, it is turning a line into a dot...

Awesome video I love it
You should change the title of the thread to "445nm" instead of "455nm"
btw cool looking Tesla coil.

Re: 455nm vs electrical tape

you should watch your diode at that current/power, your aixiz acrylic lens will start to degrade and the reflection off the lens will shine back in to the diode and fry it.. IIRC that happened to styropyro.

nice video BTW

stuart :)

This is true, I "only" had mine at 880mA when it happened. It melted the lens and too much light reflected back into the diode. You need a good lens, a cheap one being an Aixiz 405nm coated glass lens. Don't make the same $50 mistake that I made.

I got the $50 G-1 lens and im very pleased with it. There's a difference compared to the AIXIZ version, and thats why I picked the G-1.

Also when running the acrylic, it wasn't melting at all even when i did 900mA for 5 mins...

I checked the lens multiple times and it looked fine, then all at once the diode popped and the lens was very foggy.

So in short you killed it? :(

My laser is now in a portable with a glass lens...So I can't do the long runs anymore until I get more for lab use :)
