Lately, I've been experimenting with a red LOC diode whose output I estimate at about 150 mW. I have no 650 nm glasses, and the power of the thing was pretty intimidating. So I came up with a solution that will benefit anyone with an iPhone and no access to safety glasses.

Basically, I built a cardboard enclosure that holds the phone a comfortable distance from my eyes, and attached it to a pair of safety goggles. Now the only thing I'm risking from a direct laser hit is my phone's camera. With the iPhone's accelerometer and magnetometer, it also serves as a cool VR-type HUD for games  .

You can use this rig for protection against any color laser -- you'll even be able to see IR through it, since the iPhone's CCD is sensitive to very long wavelengths.

Careful, though: it's a little disorienting, since there's a bit of lag between reality and the phone's screen. Also, you'll have no peripheral vision.
Always exercise common sense, and don't look into the beam or anything..this isn't infallible. The goggles could fall off or break. And remember that a direct laser strike will most likely do to your camera's sensor what it would do to your retina - that is, burn holes in it.

So I can either buy a good pair of safety goggles for ~$100 or an iPhone for ~$1000 or get on some 24 month plan? I think I'll go for the goggles :na:
It's an ingenious mod though, better than using a brick lol.

@TJ Hahaha I never would have thought of that use

I'd avoid being seen in public with those on.
Unless of course you also have the mandatory blow-up rubber duck thingy around your waist.
Great for viewing IR although.
:thanks: for enlightening my morning.

Well, yeah -- they're goofy as hell. Of course, since they're the only eye protection I have, I'll be the only one in the same room as the laser anyway! Besides, let's face it: if you spend much of your free time building handheld lasers, it probably isn't _this_ that's going to push your reputation over the brink of geekdom.

Another nice thing about these, btw, is that they allow for hands-free video recording. Just start taping, and they record everything you see...

I used to get similar reactions when I bolted a full size VHS camcorder to the top of an old motorcycle helmet and went riding....

But hey, I got some great footage with it.

I can't seem to find this in the Apple store. Is this a licensed accessory? ;)

Regardless of how it looks I think it is a neat idea. I await your version 2.0 version of it and the availability of the kit ;).
