Laser Pointers Take Down Helicopter






They have written, correctly, about not pointing to real helicopter, but no one has thought to their own health ...

Yea, it's the guys over at Photonlexicon.com, they know what they're doing.

I would imagine they're below 5mW lasers.
 
yeah, those are exactly the ones claiming that we are idiots with pointers that promote irresponsible stuff like pointing at aircrafts and that we don't know about safety. I'm totally sure those weren't 5mW pointers...
 
I would assume that they know what they are doing enough to only use <5mW pointers, however.. there is a red and a blu-ray in the video which are bound to be more powerful than that, plus two green lasers coming from the right which I would estimate to be at least 30mW. Unless this camera picks up light from all wavelengths really really well, these people are being pretty careless. You can see that the lasers are brighter just under the helicopter, suggesting there is quite a lot of smoke in the air, but still not enough to make <5mW lasers as visible as that.

At around 0:58 you can also hear someone saying something about getting hit in the eye. This is right after the blu-ray is switched on, which suggests it is not eye safe.

Rather depressing to see such behaviour from those who have flamed me, Albert and several others on PL just for mentioning hand held lasers.

Probably wasn't the same guys that flamed you. Even then, these guys know exactly what they are doing and they know that they are only endagering their own health by being there and doing that. They know the dangers and could choose to stop at any time they wish if they are concerned.

They also noted that lasers should NEVER be pointed at a real aircraft.

You guys need to lighten up.
 
I would wear safety glasses in any case, because a direct beam <5 mW in the eye can cause serious harm too. Accidents can happen even to expert guys.

Maybe so. If anybody here would have posted a video like that I'm sure there would be plenty of safety bashing comments though...if for no other reason than "kids watch that shit, and aren't experts, and could damage their eyes if they tried it..."

To each his own. I wish my little helicopter wasn't broken because I want to try this now.

And yes, We work with multi-watt lasers and are very safety conscious. Notice no pointers are aiming eye level when the heli drops.

There's a dude at some point on the left side that's pulling hia head to aside a bit disturbed by the light from the lazorz... I don't know, I'm usually pulling anything to the edge (beeing a biker and alpinist as well), but this is so uncontrolable that I wouldn't push it that far ever. Ok, I can understand the fun in that, but I'd keep only the lazorz dude in the room, only after a coinsciouns warning would be issued. Sorry if I caused any flames with this video, that wasn't my intention. The flick itself is really nice and the message behind it as well, but I couldn't notice the fact that security was minimal. I can understand "they know what they are doing" in a matter of a biker performing a wheelie (experience matters) but you can only hope no reflective light would shine in someone's retina in this set-up. All in all it really is an educational video
 
I dont understand.. HOW do those lasers take down that toy helicopters?

Its not like its being set on fire or anything, so what's the mechanism here?
 
They are not actually taking down the heli, first time the dude controling it crashes it on purpose, second time it just runs out of batteries.
 
Oh well, so now the masters on laser safety can operate several 150mW lasers against a reflective plastic made helicopter on a small room but I get flamed for saying that you don't need goggles to operate a single 15mW green module. LOL
 
Looks like a pretty dangerous game to me too - its all to easy accidentily shine someone in the face when waving lasers around standing in a circle like that. I wouldn't have it in my house.
