What current would you want the 12x diode to be tortured at?

Since we don't want to loose time, poll ends in 3 days, more than enough IMO. This poll is public

You should have a graph of the diode's output power listed here also. These diodes don't have linear efficiency. IE 350mA with a 12x diode will have a higher power output than an 8x diode at the same current. So just picking a current that's higher than an 8x doesn't necessarily make it a good choice.

Hey guyz -- There are a few vets trying to do this in a scientific approach. If you don't have a 12X under some applied current, wait for the results.
OR do what I did --- BUY a 12X and throw caution to the wind -- Turn it up to 600 mW --- if you dare. Otherwise, don't question the those trying to provide you with the best info available. Understand that we here push laser diodes well beyond rated specs.

thanks... I imagine it has the same linearity up to 600mW? If so, that seems like it could be safe. Also, why don't manufacturers of BR drives overdrive their diodes? It seems like running a 12X at double rated CW should still give it a lifetime of many hundreds of hours....

Will --

We found out many years ago that RED diodes had a knee beyond which diode life got short -- usually due to COD. (I believe COD is correct)
Anyhow, BR diodes don't seem to show similar characteristics on the graph and just join all the others as LEDs.
This is why the testing is being done for these new diodes. Ohhh for the good old days!!!

Because they don't want hundreds of hours, they need thousands of hours of life out of a drive.

That 1000 hours is BS. I toasted 10 burners at around 100-150 disks. And no way does it take 1000+ hours to burn those disks.

hey HMike, I know you don't want to drive a red high above rated CW, but why not BR? and I agree with T_J, there is no way you need over a few hundred hours of life unless you are a disk factory, most people probably use less than an hour and on top of that turning up the power will increase the burn speed. It seems like manufacturers could save a bundle by overdriving diodes.

We don't want to drive REDs too much above the observed knee in the P/I graph. As I pointed out, the BR diodes don't seem to display similar kinks in their graphs. That's why all the testing.
