Hello,
I'm new here, so forgive me if I'm missing something obvious. I've been searching around trying to find an inexpensive host, but am struggling to find something for a 25mm module I have.
I see some users commission beautiful machined hosts, but I fear this may be out of my desired price range.
It seems 25mm could fit snugly inside 1" copper pipe, I was considering trying to cram the module, two 18650's, a switch, and some springs to make something crude. I'd rather buy some ready made kit or chinese flashlight+heatsink if there is an easier path.
Thanks!

Hi,
Ok what is the bottom line in price for your purchase this will help members to give you a better answer .
Rich:)
I'd like to target about $50 (USD).

For any DIY options, I only have some hand tools (soldering iron, dremel, cordless drill etc) no lathe, mill, drill press, taps, dies, etc for doing any real metal work.

Hi,
Question what're you think of putting in the host as to Wave length and power? That will determine the size of heat sink and battery options.
Also what preferences Aluminum heat sink, Aluminum with a copper core. or full copper. Im just feeling you out about you needs.
Mind you Aluminum will be more to your speed at a total cost of 50.00 + shipping.

At the moment I have a ~1.2W 520nm 25mm copper module, it seems it alone takes a couple minutes before it gets hot to touch. Cheaper aluminum sounds good :)
How do the modules mount in your host? Is it some kind of set screw and thermal paste or a more permanent fit?

A 1W green diode produces alot of heat. Copper is just about the best metal at heatsinking. Getting hot means it's doing it's job.
I hope your not running it a couple minutes straight?? 30 seconds on 60 seconds off is best to have a lasting laser.
Yes, Lifetimes17 hosts usually are made so the module slides in and is secured with a set screw. Using thermal paste is up to you but most do use it.

Hi,
Like GSS said set screw secure add thermal compound , And that diode requires 2x lithium ion batteries.
This is an Aluminum host powder coated translucent Green but this is a custom host.
Mind you there is a lot of material to be removed to fit the 25mm DTR heat sink. so for 50.00 your better off getting a flash light modded host.

The copper module will get a bit hot in my hands after some time, but that is when I let it cool. I haven't timed how long this is, but when very cold it seems to take a couple minutes, warm it is probobly about 30 seconds. I was assuming this heavy chunk of copper (from DTR) has a good thermal interface to the diode, such that as long as it remains cool the diode is not overheating. Subjectively the module seems to correlate to what I'd expect for the ~6W dissipation.
A quick inexpensive portable host is my need now, but I'd love to be able to use it continuously with a large enough heat sink.

Hi KW.
Did you get my PM , I put his host together yesterday and it will hold your 25mm Copper DTR module. Prewired all you need is thermal compound and solder two wires and heat shrink the solder joints. The host will include a focus adapter and heat shrink tubing and a hex key to secure the 25mm module.

The focus adapter is what holds the lend so you can focus the beam without burning your fingers

Hi GSS,
he states in post #7 its a 520nm / 1.2W diode . So a G Ball diode would be 525nm correct me. And he says he has a G8 lens .
