Wanting to build an orange laser pointer

I'd like to have a orange(ish) 5mw or less laser pointer that wont cost me a car. Im not asking for a perfect orange wavelength but if it would be considered an orange and is relatively available, it should work. Ideally I wouldn't have to make anything, but I dont think any body has mass manufactured these yet. Is what im even asking for possible?

Why are you only interested in<5 mW? You'll need a 635nm to 638nm laser diode, single mode and even that won't look very orange to you. You'll have to drive it very close to threshold, maybe 30 mA. Check out DRT's site. A true orange would be ~605nm. Not gonna find that easily or cheaply.

I only like <5mw because there's no point in getting a laser of a specific color you want just for it to be blocked by laser goggles. I knew it wasn't going to be easy to find one, but I might be able to combine a red and green to get a color similar to what I want. Or I might just settle on a different wavelength that's kinda"exotic"

You only need goggles for protection against specular reflections. If you are certain of where you are pointing it you should be fine. You'll never see the beam or dot with goggles on unless you are running multi-watt powers, and then only the spot. I only use my goggles when doing alignment of optics where a specular reflection is likely to happen. But, you should be very familiar with how these reflections can happen before you get complacent. That is how accidents happen.

Pointer? Short answer no.
Non-handheld? You can get a chinese rgb package for 25 dollars and mix the red and green till you get orange. It's a cheap way to get a wide range of colours + "white". Note that these are not aligned very well from the factory and might require some DIY

Orange laser pointers are not a reality yet. A simple google search will tell you same.

If you want to try an easysimple to do laser build have a look at Survival Laser, they sell kits with everything but the diode.

I dont remember where i saw those orange diodes, might have been a misreading of 520 or something. Well hopefully some day. Still want work on getting a rainbow of 5mw or less lasers though.

Two years ago there was research into creating 600nm direct diodes but was never released to the public.

Orange lasers exist, just behind closed doors unfortunately.

im guessing if i want one of those, id have to find some type of discarded equipment, or sell a car.
Im kinda wanting to go on a route with making a RGB laser, just so i could at least see what i want

I think i could get away with a rg laser instead of full rgb, that would save on dicromic mirrors, and it will be a lot easier to find eye safe diodes in my preferred eye safe range

You can buy RGB lasers in a lab host pretty cheaply, but pointers are rare and Sanwu and O-Like are the only ones that make them that I'm aware of. Neither is as inexpensive as you would like. Try Techhood for a three diode RGB laser. I believe you can get all direct diodes for ~$60.00. Output power is ~300 mW. They have TTL inputs to modulate the colors.

RGB can achieve a comparable color to pure orange. Save your wallet and go with RGB.

Source: I own both a sanwu RGB and a 607nm DPSS lab laser. 607 on bottom left, RGB on top right
Oh dang, I didn't know 607nm labbies existed. Where did you buy that one? That's totally cool.

One would think if there is a DPSS unit, with enough modifications, you could make it portable.

The only other option other than an RGB laser would be a HeNe, but Im guessing thats gonna be as hard to find as an orange diode itself.
and the ones i do find are ~630nm
