So with me being a laggard after learning that high powered handheld lasers were easily available back in December, I went on Amazon immediately and got their, as the manual calls it, "High -power blue lightf flashlight." It was listed on Amazon as "WORD GX" along with a bunch of other mumbo jumbo buzzwords like "military, tactical, flashlight," etc.
The host is rather unique looking, I don't believe I've seen it mentioned anywhere or any references to it at all
It's very powerful, I estimate about 800-900 mW, although there's no way to really know other than using a LPM which I don't have access to. Unfortunately after two weeks of use, the threading on the battery tailcap gave out. I tried to oil it but it just made it worse, which was when I decided to try the Thor from Laserpointerstore. I sent away for the 3W version and it finally came this weekend after a two month wait.
Again, there's no way for me to really get an accurate reading on the power other than using an LPM, but I have reason to believe the 3W claim is accurate. It makes a high pitch electrical sound when burning at the focal point, something that my more recently made Osram 2W and Nichia 1W builds definitely do not do. That alone is pretty impressive and actually pretty scary as well. I have to say I really like the host as well. At first, it felt a bit more bulky and unwieldy than the ones I assembled myself, but it occured to me that this thing feels a bit more manufactured and "processed" to be an end product.
It is not easily disassembled, although I haven't tried any harder than just a bit more force than usual to unscrew it. There is probably glue involved here, which is not something I really want to deal with, although I am curious which diode it uses. Here is the spot focused to "infinity" (or as far in as the focus screws) at about 15 ft:
and here is an unfocused diffuse reflection on the wall:
I have to say I'm impressed with the spot quality which is much more consistently "filled in" than my builds. Again any info on which diode this uses would be helpful
I have to say the Thor H wins out, although it does make me a bit uncomfortable. It seems to be designed as a bludgeon, and is definitely not something you want to bring outside with you. The host seems made to be just thrown around and abused without a second thought. My builds feel like precision optical instruments, whereas this feels like a dangerous weapon whose only safety feature is a half second soft start. On the other hand, the WORD GX host felt like an odd flashlight which is unique but not really imposing. It's definitely an interesting contrast between hosts. In conclusion, I have to rate the Thor H positively and I wish that noobies would find this device which actually turns out to be a quality product instead of getting scammed and buying a "50000mW" gatling laser for a lot more money. I would advise you to stay away from the Amazon "WORD GX" host as it evidently has manufacturing flaws and the Amazon reviews seem to coincide with this. Also, ALWAYS use good laser safety glasses while using these indoors and up close, which should be obvious. Thanks for reading!
