@Michael3

Instead of posting two or three times in a few minutes time, try using the edit icon on the bottom right of your last post. You can then add information instead of triple posting....which is highly frowned on here.

The only difference between the 50 mW and 100 mW lasers are the driver current. You could buy these for as little as $5.00 on eBay and find one that is outputting more than the others. I still don't get why people spend extra money to get these same lasers from Sanwu, or anyone else, as they are the SAME lasers. If you want to get a higher output, pot mode it yourself.
Just mentioned Sanwu as Micheal is set on the number 100mw.. and Sanwu meters them with a accurate meter.

As far as taking these lasers apart, they most likely break as everything is glued in from mass production.
Again, I just believe the one you ordered from "laserpointerstore" is the exact laser inside and just metered a higher. They might even use their own "Pocket Meter" they sell which might give you an idea of the lasers power, but their pocket meter isn't to accurate in measuring little intervals of mw's and might vary by 50mw or 100mw more.
Then again, like mentioned 80mw or 100mw isn't a big difference and you should really consider like Paul said to get a bunch off ebay for $5 or $6 and if its for astromony use a plastic tie for the switch and use the key at the back for off and on..They most likely have the same one you ordered also on ebay..

i am interested in any higher output even if its blue if it will be the equivalent or better than the 100mw green. (as far as apparent brightness) so 100mw and up and whichever color but i just have a budget so looking for the best possibility $70 or under i guess. could go a tee tad higher but not much. used is an option or buy a cheaper one and get a good diode and module i don't know what will work as i haven't done much in this realm. and i very much appreciate every ones input. thank you

Play with this..

1W of blue 450 should be around 100mw of 532
Then maby you should get a cheap Thor laser.
If you want good quality I would send member "Lifetime17" a PM and maby he has something or could put something together for you. His prices are great and he is a great guy and will stand by his work %100:)

thank you so much. :) i will check that and what lifetime 17 has out. from what i have gleaned so far 100mw green should be bright enough for star gazing. is this accurate or does it need to be more powerful?

One very important thing to remember is that when you go from a 100mW 532nm to a 1W 450nm, is that the visible brightness may be the same, but you've increased the power (and the danger level) 10 times.
Please be careful, a hit in the eye by a 1W laser is unforgiving.

100mw of green should be more than enough.
Big issue with the 532nm DPSS is they don't like cold weather and don't perform well. Summer nights will be fine in TN but in winter there will be issues with keeping the laser warm.
520nm green is a direct diode and work fine in cold. The trade off is not as tight of a beam, but with a 3 element lens its fine. High output 520 diodes are expensive but the lower ones aren't to much.
You have to make a decision but I would look into having a chat with Lifetime 17 and see to what he might come up with if you want quality at a good price, either way he's a wealth of info and someone you might want a build from later on.

on sanwu's site i looked at the pocket laser and they have an option for 150mw 520nm and 525nm, is the 525nm also good in the cold? or should i spend $10 more on the 520nm?

525 or 520, doesn't matter, they are not DPSS lasers, just direct to wavelength diodes. As far as green lasers go, 532 nm DPSS lasers are the ones which are sensitive to cold.

Keep in mind that the only green laser that is susceptible to cold weather is the 532nm ones. All others will be direct diodes and actually like it cold. Once the 532nm ones warm up, they generally do well in the cold unless it is bitterly cold.

thank you, that is very helpful to know. I was fortunate enough to be able to afford the sanwu pocket 525nm 150mw. i wasn't expecting to be able to get that but am thankful. i look forward to a nice laser. one that will hopefully last for a while.
