I contacted Billy and asked if i could send it back for a refund, but no luck there. He swears it was working when he mailed it off.

I feel cheated.

So, now I have a very tiny and very expensive heater. Another way to look at it is I paid $250 for a copper module, 3 element lens, and a driver... the dead rare diode was free.

It sucks to be out the money, but I think I'm more bummed that such an awesome diode is dead.

So kids, the moral of this story is: NEVER EVER, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, PAY FOR AN ITEM USING FRIENDS AND FAMILY.

Did BB insure the shippment? If not, it should have been insured.

Hopefully he will work something out with you- Is not your doing or fault it was DOA

He received a less than working Opt Lasers module and drivers. I still use friends and family, but only with members I know and especially never with someone who has done this before. I am so sorry that you got screwed out of $250, Ted.

this is the first time i see a dead diode that isn't "led" but produces heat,also it doesn't make sense this 3,9v and 173ma as this is a high vf diode and i guess this is a boost driver, so at 3,9v would work in full regulation,that means higher than 300ma to produce the output of 275ma and the high vf, are you sure
that you didn't hooked something wrong on the first time?

It likely has a Nano Boost driver on it. I have tested these drivers with anywhere from 6 diodes in series to 10 diodes and at voltages from 4.2 VDC to 2.9 VDC and they remain rock steady at 275 mA or around whatever current it pushes. They are a very nice boost driver in this respect. No matter what the battery voltage or the load, the current remains the same.

It was likely blown by either putting it in a pen with no heat sink, or run for way too long. It seems that when BillyBob has a laser sale, it is because he has blown a diode or cause damage in some other way.

its not exactly "no matter what" because when a driver is boosting to make the extra volts on the output it draws more current than the output current to make that job, if the curent on input and output was the same then it can't magically makes the volts and the actuall total watts output higher.

on this case numbers doesn't make sense and also he mentioned "As it heated up that number began to drop",well constant current driver shouldn't supposed to do that

Of course I was talking about a good Li-ion battery. I didn't expect you to say the battery couldn't supply the current as he was using a PS. If the battery is good and hasn't discharged to the point it can no longer work, the driver will be rock steady. Okay?

Wow, crap news T-warne, I feel for both you and billybob. Seams like you had the write mind frame with photos, etc..... seeing as he took a working photo and had the date/name in the same frame. I just went through a similar process with the PLT5-488, and was continually thinking if i'd covered my a#* on all the legal fronts and proof.

I'd be interested to know what would of changed if it wasn't f&f, thats if you had sent the payment normally, but the package was sent via regular post and with no insurance, would Paypal still refund you is the question? Tough hobby, sending new/used expensive sensitive electronics across the globe. We get lucky majority of the time. Rip little diode

EDIT: just read the above posts, yes i agree to some extent what deadshadow is explaining. I never power laser diode drivers with a VPS, only "raw" laser diodes. I've had mixed results in the past powering drivers with a VPS as it switches between CC and CV to suit the regulation requirements (voltage and current) of the driver which i found wouldn't allow the driver to draw its required current to suit the intended I, and therefore Vf of the diode.

I only use batteries to power drivers, a real "operating" test!

The seller in my opinion also didn't go out of their way to package such a nice and expensive diode properly. Kinda neglectful to not even have a put it in a static bag "at the least"...

Paypal takes 3% of the total amount sent for Domestic and International transactions. This is neglecting currency conversion fees. (so USD to USD)

If sending via f&f, its free for Domestic transactions, if its international then Paypal charge 1% of the total. And again neglecting currency conversion fees.

So you save 2% on International, 3% Domestic using f&f, but sacrificing the buyer protection.

For that test I had the power supply set to 3.9 volts and 5 amps.

This morning I gave it another go. 3.9v and 5A: I hooked up the module and no photons. Now it is only drawing 0.160A So I bumped the supply up to 4.2v and 5A... the draw is .158A.

Just to be sure it is not my power supply, I also tried a freshly charged 18650. Still no photons.

Paul, I'd be happy to send the module to you to if you want to take a look at it.


I would love if BillyBob would chime in to explain his request to send the funds friends and family. I think it had something to do with desperately needing the funds immediately.

At this point I am not asking for compensation. I accept responsibility for my foolishness, and the resulting consequences. I'm just the latest poster boy for why we never send $ as friends & family when making a purchase. I hope others can learn from my mistake.

I see it as a double-edged sword. There are some sellers that will only sell through f&f, they do this to protect themselves from unscrupulous buyers. So the buyer had no recourse. Should the buyer do something to damage the unit.

The flap side is now the buyer has no protection from a unscrupulous seller or damage done to the unit in transit. One person or the other is left holding the bag.

What’s the answer?

Third party maybe.?

Or just trust what the other individual says and hope their honest. :thinking:
