Here is a WL nano host with an M140 diode built for me by Justin F., a member on here :) it uses a top notch driver with slow start and supports two 10440 cells for it's full 2w output, one 10440 and one standard AAA battery for a 1w output, or a 10440 with a dummy cell for about 500mW. I like using it with the AAA and 10440 because it still has a nice visible beam, decent burning power, and about 45 sec duty cycle before the host starts getting warm. It'd probably have a mad decent duty cycle with a dummy cell instead of the AAA but I don't have any dummies. With the two 10440 cells, this thing is a monster! Smoke's wood literally instantly! But the host starts getting hot after only 15-20 seconds. Real hot after 30 sec so I figured I could sacrifice having a forest fire starter in my pocket and just a CD case's worst enemy instead since it gives such a noticeably better duty cycle lol. The laser is, for the most part, non focusable. You can unscrew the cap, use an Alan wrench to get the inside cap off, and then focus the lens but I've never bothered to do that. Justin has his own brand of glass lens that is very impressive to me because it makes the dot more round than any 445nm multimode diode I've seen. I can't say that this laser compliments divergence, but at a distance the dot is a large spot instead of a large box/line like I usually get with a multimode. I wanted a stronger, pen shaped laser that was portable, durable, and could impress (with safety in mind of course!) and Justin delivered beyond for me. I'd give this laser ten outta ten! I've put it through the ringer and it's still going as strong as day one (got it around Christmas). Thank you Justin and thank you everyone else for checking this out!

Apparently, no one has told you the dangers of mixing different types of batteries together in the same device. If you are mixing 1.5 volt alkaline batteries with 3.7 volt Li batteries it will not end well for you. The difference in voltage and energy density of these different batteries will give a mismatch where the Li battery can actually set up a charge voltage on the alkaline one and next thing you know, it's smoking and burning. This is not a viable way to use these batteries.

Paul is right that an alkaline can be charged in parallel with a lithium ion as the voltage is 1.5v on the alkaline and the lithium voltage is a minimum of 3.7v; I will say that I've ran batteries like this before (only 10440s) with an alkaline to increase the voltage a minimum amount but it's not ideal. The most I could imagine happening is the alkaline ruptures but I've not had one start smoking (unless shorted to ground).

Nonetheless I did let the OP know that a dummy battery 10440 is a better option if worried about that situation. Safety is important.

Thanks a lot for your review on the build, I hope you are enjoying It! I know theyre certainly a headache to cram everything into, I really like the output we can get from that nano with two lithiums which is what it was set for on the driver.. while building and trying to test the output with a dummy cell but didn't have one at the time, so I used an alkaline instead.. bottom line get a dummy cell if you want to be really safe.

Love this build hope it lasts you a long time and if it does get an issue down the road we will just rebuild it! Enjoy and thanks again for the review.

Had 94z28 build me two Nanos and am real happy with them. Still going strong and a nice addition to my collection. Enjoy and be safe. And thanks 94z28. :)

Edit, actually it was three, because my cat ( the one I don't have ) put the batteries in wrong in one of them. Hate it when he does that. :tinfoil:

Yes, never mix match the batteries, especially not when you have lithiums in the mix. Lithiums are dangerous enough as it is. Don't make that a habit.
But nice laser however. And good job 94Z28. :beer:

Nice little burner you've got there, laserdreads! :beer:
Do you have any additional photos of this baby, you can't have too many?

~~~~ but I don't have any dummies. (Cells) ~~
Was thinking, if you'd want to try and make your own "dummy cell" take a 16 penny nail, cut both ends off make in as long as a 10440, wrap it in duct-tape or similar to make it the same diameter. You should be good to go. Your just trying to fill the void and carry current to the tail cap or vice-a-versa. Food for thought anyways. Enjoy 94z28's build, he does great work. Enjoy that puppy, don't burn down the house or the neighbors cat. :) ( cat might be ok) :D ( don't tell peta ) :D
Ps, I agree, beam shots ( hint hint) :)
Laserdreads, I must have missed reading that you didn't have any dummy cells; thanks for pointing that out Bob!
I just looked in my small battery storage box and I have a couple of 10440 dummies, if you'd like, I'll send you one no charge, just PM me your address; IIRC, I got these dummy cells from Fasttech a while back. :)
PS - You guys are awfully hard on the poor kitties around here. :eek: I guess I better watch my tail! ;)
Yes, the build is very nice, indeed. I was too concerned with the battery issue at first to comment on it. Do try to use a dummy 10440 battery instead of an alkaline AA.
(1)Thanks BowtieGuy, just trying to help. :)
(2) haaa , never made the connection, looks like I'll have to find other four legged fury creature to pick on. :D
