Hello, clip here, I have returned!

I have been here before; almost a year ago now. I was here due to a being a victim to MrJoker's scams. I am back now looking to have another go at buying a laser!

Ill just get straight to the point, this is what I am looking for it to do specifically... I want it to be able to melt/burn through a clearish/whiteish zip tie, if that is possible. It's not a tiny zip tie but not too thick either.

What mW or nm am I looking at to do this? My price range is about $200. I was looking at Sanwu's Challenger II, would that do the trick? Or is there a better laser that will get the job done for less money?

I am still quiet novice when it comes to lasers so I'm looking for anyone that can help! Thanks so much! :thanks:

The Sanwu Challenger 2, ( I'm guessing the 445 at 3 watts for 200.00ish ) will diffidently do the trick. She'll burn through about anything gets in her way. You can't go wrong with Sanwu, quality is right up there. With a laser that powerful make sure you grab some safety glasses, eyes don't grow back. Be safe and enjoy and welcome to/back to the forum. :)

there are a lot of easier and safer ways to cut a zip tie without risk to your eyesight.

What are you actually looking to do?

@BobMc I am 100% about safety and will be sure to buy safety glasses upon my purchase for a laser this powerful is far from a toy. Just to be clear you believe this can cut through a decent sized zip tie? Possibly through a glass panel if that makes a difference.

@Encap I have my own personal reasons for the usage of the laser, one being melting of zip ties, I do get that there are easier ways to cut a zip tie but not when you can't access it by hand.

A lot depends on how far away the ziptie is? Within 5 feet it shouldn't be a problem. May take a bit though. Can't speak to the glass being in front, that might make a difference. If the glass can't be removed you might want to think about jumping up to the 5 watt. ~~~~ edit, stick to the g2 lens , they burn better .

The zip tie will be anywhere from 6 inches to 3 feet away but I can't remove the glass. The 3W 445nm Sanwu with the G2 lense should do the trick then? It's right in my price range at a final total of $200, Sanwu is legit right? Any other recommendations or first timer pro tips so I don't ruin the laser once I get it?

Thank you for you help once again!

The only people so far that ask the same question are just looking for a way to rip off arcade machines that use zip ties which is why I asked. It doesn't work, not to mention it is a stupid brain damaged idea/activity to begin with.

That was my first thought also, there have been more than a few threads started in the past asking this very same question.
This is not saying that this is your intention, but many of us become leery when this question pops up again.
If you are going to use a multi-watt laser of any wavelength for something like this, my biggest concern would be possible reflections from that glass surface, or any thing else near that ziptie that you're trying to cut, not to mention possible damage/fire hazards from other items accidently getting lased in the process.
If you go through with this, just be sure you have the proper eye protection on, and it's rated for the wavelength and the power you'll be using.

No, I am not saying it will work through the glass. I don't know . Please don't use my advise for anything illegal. It was given in good faith

If you are doing nothing illegal then why not share your reason
to be able to cut a White Zip Tie through a piece of glass with
a Laser beam ???

Yeah... smells real fishy....
Unless he can explain his actual need to cut a large Zip Tie
behind glass...

I am a college student and trying to prank a friend. Since returning to the university his dorm deadbolt has not been able to lock due to it being out of line with the cut out in the door. So in the mean time he uses a zip tie around the handle and put a hook into a stud beside the door frame so at night no one can come in while he is sleeping. There is a window to the right of the door that has a clear shot to the zip tie depending on where I stand I should be able to get within 6 inches depending on the angle.

Can someone link me to some safety glasses rated for a 3W 445nm blue laser?

Eagle Pair® 190-540nm OD6 Slip Over Laser Safety Goggles
These are some very good safety glasses for high powered lasers.

You can find cheaper laser glasses on ebay, but they might or might not be as good.

I would ABSOLUTELY NOT recommend doing this!

I know how much space is in a typical dorm room (having been there myself). The risk of a stray reflection causing harm to your friend or an innocent bystander is just too high. Remember, at these power levels, you can be blinded before the blink reflex kicks in.

Find a safer way to do this prank.

At a great angle as you describe... Most of the beam will be
reflected off the glass and as "alphabirth" says... dangerous for
the occupants.

Well I bought the laser and tried my luck. I ended up burning down the dorms, and blinding my left eye. Now I have been expelled from college and am awaiting trail for 3rd degree murder of 2 students and arson. I should have listened to you guys, I don't know what I was thinking.
