How's the output stability on these third generation Rigels? Are the plagued by the same issues as the first and second gen lasers?

Actually this one performs pretty well! On all the runs I've seen it's never gone full green or failed to lase so they've definitely had time to perform this model over the generations as compared to the first ones. It does tend to vary in brightness quite often. It's be bright, then be dim, back to bright etc but coming from a 594 this is expected.

Overall? Perfect :D

Do you think it is sufficiently stable to actually function as a pointer in a presentation? That's what I'm wanting this for. I've had a first and second gen 594, and they were both woefully inadequate for this task. What's your thoughts on the matter? Thanks bro!

Of course! :D

I usually just shine mine around and it works quite well. Albeit I am also using batteries that came with the laser so they might not be fully charged which may also cause the fluctuation in brightness. In a lit room it does the job, but barely. I would highly consider going with a higher rated 594 unit if you want to use it as presentation purposes. Be aware that my unit gets hot QUICK! In a bout 30seconds which is it's recommended duty cycle I can feel the host heat up so you'll need to keep your lectures short :D

The lower end power ones are good just to shine around and just have fun with really :p

How would you say it compares to the Libra? I have a 3-4 mW 635 that I'm using presently that gets the job done fine.

I'm really considering between a 594 and a 589, and honestly I prefer everything about the "Rigel" better than a 589 pen, especially since apparently they can be had through DL as well.

Interesting. My older generation Rigel -- a more powerful unit -- does not seem to heat up much at all. After 2 minutes it's barely warm.

You can special order a 594 unit from DL yeah. If I remember correctly I was charged $300 for the 0.6mW-2mW unit, so $100 cheaper then the Rigel-2 from LaserGlow! When compared to the Libra, I find the Libra to appear a little brighter(even though it's farther from the peak sensitivity) then the Rigel, although only a little more. The Libra is also a diode laser so it's brightness wouldn't jump around all the time too haha. Now that I've seen both 589 & 594 I have to say 594 is probably my favorite yellow/orange. Such a peaceful color :p

Yeah. A couple years ago I had a CNI 594 unit that barely heated up after 1 min. It seems like these 3rd generation units heatsinking isn't as good or the finish makes the heat transfer happen more quickly :(

It seems that DL has temporarily stopped the special orders. I spoke to them about ordering a GLP-561, and they told me they cannot take special orders until further notice.

Unique color, I bet a few watts worth would look really amazing.

Your observation on the brightness of the 594 is about what I recall from mine, before I pot modded it that is. ;)

I'm almost certainly going to go with a GLP-589 just because of availability and cost. I really want a 594 though, but it doesn't feel like a sure thing like the 589 would be.

I agree. You should get a 589, they tend to be much more stable and much more reliable than 593.5s. Not to mention having more power for the same cost.

Alex, you mention that you are using the batteries that came with your laser. What type of cells did they send with your unit?
I'm just wondering what they consider the best to use in these 594's.

They sent over 2xAAA's Maxwell batteries. I went ahead and bought some Duracell AAA's in a 4 pack and have yet to try those :p
