Help needed: I need a picture of the results when using DG + Cross type pointer

Dear everyone,
I am trying to create a matrix projection from a laser. Color is not essential on this stage.

The theory is that a cross-type laser and a "star field" diffraction grating in front of it will provide the result shown below.
Can anyone confirm this? Or provide a picture of the result if you own a DG and a cross-type laser?
All help is GREATLY appreciated! :yh:

Before I show you how wrong you are, I'm curious to know how you think it works.

It purely based on assumption... like not many would want to hold 2 cap at once while pointing a laser around...:yh:

but i'll be glad if you could prove me wrong.... i'll end up learning something new from a veteran who specialize on this optical topic. and the OP get his question answer as well..

So simply because holding the caps would be hard, you assume that the optical phenomenon also would be invalid? I am having a hard time following the cause-effect trail on that argument :p

I bet someone on here has a integrated cross cap, or a nice rig to hold the caps and could put this to rest. Just to be clear: I haven't seen it done, so I don't know that it will work either.

Yeah, I am looking forward to seeing some experimentation as well =)

I see no reason why this wouldn't work as long as:
1. The distance between the output of the cross filter and the grating was carefully adjusted
2. The grating was rotated and well-aligned
3. The cross filter doesn't cause too much divergence, and/or the grating can accept a wide beam

ugh part of my memory tell me that i've tried and suceed while the other part says there's a grid grating for that and it would be impractical if possible... i'm contradicting myself... it your time to shine Cyparagon....(prove me wrong quickly) before i force my self to go and buy more laser to test this out):)

as to why i think it was impossible was stated by Rivern...

and the DG for star effect gives you a bunch of un-even, randomdly spaced dots and + line filter will give you a messy grid...

I think the difficult part of this is that the actual crossed part of the cross image has to fall on a single path in the diffraction grating. The reason most diffraction gratings produce uneven points is that different portions of the beam are falling on different parts of the grating and being split up from there. If the grating wasn't perfectly aligned, there would be lines and angles all over the place with no sense of a grid. Should be doable as long as the grating is very close to the cross filter.

I think it's very much possible, but I'm not sure of how easy it is.

I can't find my cross lens. The line lens will have to do. Assembled with sticky tac.
