New addition to my collection, 50 mW (107mW peak) DL Spartan 589nm

Just wanted to shout out to member GR3EN and how great he was to do business with in my acquisition of this Dragon Lasers 50mW (107mW peak) Spartan 589nm. This laser is absolutely beautiful and I feel honored to be its new owner. The host is very solid, quite hefty like a tactical flashlight and well manufactured, tail cap threads are fine and smooth as butter and tail cap switch and button feel solid in both constant on and off positions. The host has a screw-in lens cap which I think is a nice feature. The laser runs on one 18650 battery, I am using an AW IMR 2200mAh which is working very well with it so far. Once warmed up the laser has a beautiful and very bright yellow sunburst like spot with a very nice tightly collimated DPSS beam. Cold start the brightness varies noticeably but settles down quick with a steady increase in brightness after 10-15 seconds. At about 30 seconds it is nice and bright and stable and holds well once warm. I am surprised with how visible the beam is in lower light conditions not to mention how clear it is in the dark. Thanks everyone! This definitely was love at first sight for me, this wavelength is just beautiful. It is even more stunning than I was imagining it to be. I have to admit while I was waiting for it to arrive, every time I would take my dog outside at night I would glance up at the street light outside my house and smile thinking, I'm going to have laser that exact color. Now to one day get to see a laser guide star in action and see the king of yellow in operation. :beer:

Update, added new picture: Laser illuminated tree star

Completely dark room, only light source is from the 589nm lasing the star on the tree

Just wanted to play around with this idea and see how it would turn out. I am impressed with how well it lights the entire room with a beautiful warm glow. I was also impressed that with no other light in the room it was able to illuminate the entire tree and the surrounding area really well on the camera. :beer:

I'm hoping to nab one from dragon lasers with my Christmas bonus for my prop, but with that 50mW being so bright and visible without any fog, I definitely am on the fence. Safety being my primary concern once i get into that wattage .

Safety being my primary concern once i get into that wattage .

All I can say to you is this, I personally feel that getting the Spartan host is the best choice and you can still get 5mW in the Spartan. Because the pump diode is so powerful in these you want to make sure you have the best heat dissipation as you possibly can. Not only will the Spartan host give you a much better duty cycle, it will increase the lifespan of your laser as well. These get warm fast and they are VERY dependent on temperature for their stability. There seems to be a narrow window of temperature that they like for peak output. They hate being cold, but then they also hate being hot so there is definitely a Goldilocks zone for these. I would have to bet that your Goldilocks zone is much narrower on the Aurora host. Now, as far as your power, that is going to have to be a personal choice for you. I love the fact that this one peaks at over 100mW, and gives me a beautiful visible beam in lower light conditions even as it settles in at around 50mW. If you are going to be showing your laser to many people that you can't control, in public, then you would want to stay as eye safe as you can and well...legal. Tough call, for me I like getting as many mWs or Ws as I can afford or willing to invest at any given time. The 50mW+ here though is far too bright for public display unless you can assure, and I mean with absolute certainty, that no one will be in the beam path or where the beam terminates or close to any specular reflection. But even then, if you make sure of all of that and that there is nothing that can reflect the beam back towards people and every safety precaution has been taken, you would still be firing a class 3B laser in public and if you were to be called out on that, it could only go badly I'm sure. Does the tail clicky on the Spartan activate when you start to press it or when you release it?

In other words, does it have the capacity to be a momentary on like a pointer, or does it have to be clicked and then fully released to begin lasing?
