Are these transformers even worth using...

I got my hands on a Sony flyback out of an old crt monitor (pic below), and a 12kV 35mA NST new in box (no pic yet). I think we also have a 30kV NST new in box at the shop.

Are they even powerful enough to be used in some kind of HV project?
What can be done with them besides just making a spark with a wire?

Here's the flyback. Should I have kept the board it's on intact? I just cut it out with an angle grinder.

Depends on how you will drive them .

Other than audio modulating the arc ( required driver circuit ) or normal pulling arcs there's not much to do with them

They work well in Jacobs ladders , they can be pushed rather hard power wise but they may not last

I've pushed 2 small fly backs to around 500W and they are still going but they are encased in paffarin wax

Most cases you don't need the board just the fly back as you would need to make you own primary

I drive my Flyback with a standard China ZVS board and get upto 7" arcs.

Sweet ped!
Are the arcs white...or those weak looking orange-yellow ones?
