Looks like the FDA is finally fed up with handheld lasers...

I'm just glad that we have some great laser companies that are actually based in the U.S.

Such as...?

Also, I don't see where the FDA is saying that "all battery-operated lasers are now considered SLA lasers, regardless of purpose." Can you point that out to me?

I see. So all this fuss is over an imaginary change to the regulations

My understanding is the rules haven't changed at all, what has is the FDA's interpretation of the same rules. An import ban is usually the fore-runner of a possession ban.

In a country where assault weapons can be privately owned, where massive power handguns are normal...the protectors of the people want to enforce a ban on an item that in all of history has never been shown to be used in a crime to cause harm?
Somebody is actually getting paid to think this shit up!

Strangely enough , there are now hype stories in the UK press about Princess Diana's car being caused to crash by a "blinding device or hand held laser".

Anybody want to PM me an address I can send a crappy 1-2mW laser pen to in the US to see if it gets seized? (I'll put 25mW on the CN42 declaration)

cheers

Dave

Amusement:

Noun
The state or experience of finding something funny.
The provision or enjoyment of entertainment.

oh dear

Can battery-operated, portable laser systems be sold in the U.S?
Yes, battery-operated, portable laser systems can be sold in the U.S., providing that they fully comply with the standard, are certified and reported, and are not Class IIIb lasers sold or promoted for pointing or amusement purposes.

Unless my very expensive (and unhappy lawyer who just had to wake up to answer the phone) is totally wrong this reads as a "provocative" to ban sales INSIDE the US as well.

Thanks for the insight. I'm *really* glad i bought my 589 when I did because right now there's exactly a snowball's chance in hell I'd risk spending $700+ on a laser that'll likely get seized by customs now. If I was in the current CNI GB I'd be thinking twice about buying now.

@LtKernelPanic, I am concerned about the CNI GB, I PMed WBS about any safeguards he has in place for such an event, have not heard back. I don't know what I'd do if I were responsible for that many people's money and the package was taken

I'm even more concerned because I still have an RPL 500mW 532 by optotronics being refurbished, $900, viasho is taking forever. Maybe it would be wise to wait till near Christmas time when there may be too many packages going around to check em all

Anything you already own that is being fixed is not subject to customs as its already imported goods.

Best of luck... we're about to see just how hard the FDA is cracking down
