18650's are debatably more commonly used than 16340's, there isn't too much difference other than the fact that often a laser will use 2x 16340

If you use 2x 16340's will it be brighter then 1x 18650?

Oh you mean in the same laser? 2x 16340 will give you 7V+, while 1x 18650 will give 3.7V. DO NOT interchange these in the same laser!

The laser im buying from lazerer gives me an option to buy 2x16340's or 1 18650 with the laser

Just contacted max. He sent me this

"It take either 1 x 18650 or 1 x 16340.

Have a nice day.

Max,

Which one should I use?

The 18650 will give you a longer runtime...
1x 16340 should give you around 53,6% less runtime than a single 18650.

IIRC , a higher voltage generally means a higher efficiency due to the constant current draw for both type of cells.

However for that higher efficiency , you will lose 3 times the mAh .
And due to the lower capacity , you'll reach the point of maximum tolerable internal resistance faster which means a lower late efficiency as compared to the 18650 cells.

I could be wrong tho.
IIRC . LarryDFW has proved that empirically on another post

Yeah I would go for the 18650. On a side note... why are you purchasing from lazerer? Laserbtb has a better rep around here

yes.
Lexus is better than Tata .
Peanut butter with chunks is better than smooth.
English beer is better than American water.
And Sirloin steak is better than McDonalds.

In the end its all about $$

Well if you would be so kind to post some LaserGlow prices... I'd consider laserbtb rather cheap for what they offer :beer:

People are just spoiled with ~$100 lasers. :beer:

@Epicham
I just didn't understand what you said about "cells efficiency". Care to explain, please? :beer:

I don't quite remember exactly ,but I remember that was to do with some experiment Lary or some other member did to determine the POWER IN efficiency

Yeah I think you may be talking about the current draw influencing in a li-ion capacity. When discharged at a lower rate (lower current), the battery lasts longer.
With the DC/DC converters we use, assuming we would need uh, 20W from a li-ion, that would make sense.

Assuming 100% efficiency
4.2V = ~4.76A drain
8.4V = ~2.38A drain
16,8V = ~1.19A drain

So we know that if you drain 5A from a crap 18650 it won't last long. Its life and capacity is severely lowered in some cases.

Anyways multiple (2 in this case) 16340 cells are better for high drain applications IMO. BUT a single (in this case) 18650 is better for size, capacity, at lower drain.
(Heck, if you're draining 20W from batts, you should just build a 3x or 4x 18650 host)
