Hi I on a budget and hope to try to build a laser for education purpose.

I read up and have one question- if I use a cheapest red diode first will I be able to change it to a blue diode later? I was thinking to buy a red diode which cost less than 1 buck from ebay

Not unless you change the driver as well, and if you're changing the diode and driver you may as well buy another host for 10$ and keep both lasers.

all jokes aside

3VDC 532nm Green Beam Laser Lazer 50mw-60mw-70mW Diode Module Stage Ligting | eBay
just buy one of these. all you have to do is connect it to batteries and BAM! it works.
its $10 and its 50-70mw. more than enough for you. youll see beam at night out doors and it will point hella far. you could point at your highschool from the other side of town!

then just put it in a cool case, (hmmm what do kids find cool now days....?) maybe you could pull apart a YO-YO and put it on there, or put it on your skatebord or bike.
Suprise me!

I looking for something cheap as most likely I going to blow it due to my inexperience.

650nm 5mW Dot Red Laser Module 6.5mm for Projects | eBay

This cost 1buck. Will I be able to direct drive this laser by connecting 2 1.5v battery? I trying to learn slowly by trying out the simplest.

Any very cheap driver to recommend? Quality is not a issue as I want it for learning purpose

You'll need a driver. Don't direct drive lasers without using the proper resistor.

Thanks.

So my suggested first stage is to buy a diode module and direct drive it?

If successful then I will add a driver to it?

If successful then I will learn diode harvesting?

Thanks for guiding me

its got the driver built on already, so all you need to do is conect it directly to batteries if thats what you mean.
May as well get something like this first rather than a crappy 5mw red that youll get bored of verry quickly.

Thanks I will get one of what you recommended.

Can you provide me a link of a host which I can get for the laser? and also do I need something called collimator?

the ebay links i gave you, is a laser diode, and driver all together. ALL you have to do is connect wires to 2 AA or AAA batteries. Simple :)
When you want to upgrade to a blue one, then buy a blue modual.

but the ebay link i gave you is a PERFECT begginers laser. looks great and its simple to get working.

Do you want to learn how to make one or just buy like 2 things chuck them together and ur done?
