Hello everyone. I am new to the laser hobby, although I did get a couple red pointers when they were first coming out in the late 90's. Recently I found a deal on Yugster (!) that I couldn't pass up - a 30 mW blue pen for $11. At that price, who can resist?

This kind of thing is called a "gateway drug".

Yesterday I found on Rayfoss (which I never heard of, had it not been for this forum - thanks!) a "200mW" red pen for $21.50 incl. s&h. Again, how can I resist at that price? If it is only comes in at even 75mW, it's still a bargain. However, I expect I won't stop there, and I may even try my hand at building.

Welcome to the forums.

Yes that blue pen will lead to you becoming a hopeless laser addict. I joined last yr and I won't even say what I've spent so far.

Be sure to get some glasses for your laser ( soon to be lasers I'm sure).

EstimatedProphet do you still have your pointers from the late 90's I would love to see them? Got my first red laser pointer at Radio shack for $50 in 1994 and it still works and it still has the same three N size batteries that came with it. ;)

OK, an update on Rayfoss:

Both orders came in, and I now have a green <5mW and 2 (because apparently their ordering system burped) "200mW" red. I really have no idea what the power output of the reds actually runs, and I don't right now have any way to test it. Both of them are quite bright shined on a white background.

Interesting thing I have noted - the green, after being on for a second or two, becomes much brighter. Does anyone know what could be going on?

Look up DPSS laser

Basically the green laser is an IR laser that uses crystals to change the IR into green light.
When the Laser turns on the crystals start warming up which sometimes makes them more efficient and the power increases.
