Just got my LaserBee LPM yesterday and did some testing of my Pioneer 8x in my Jayrob pocket mini with his glass lens mod. Jay shipped me the pocket mini set at 290ma like I asked. Today I put it on the laserbee and read a very steady 358mw output. Not bad at all really.

Something inside me wanted to see 400mw but oh well. An hour passed so I looked at the poor pocket mini with evil eyes and opened it up again. I installed a 1 ohm resister and increased the current to 360ma. I put it back together and looked squarely at the LaserBee with hopeful eyes. I turned on the 8x and watched the meter climb fast. It soared past 350mw and kept climbing. It slowed at 440mw and came to rest at 451mw steady for 30 seconds. I turned the 8x off remembering it is still only in a small pocket mini with a small heat sink.

451mw in a pocket mini is very acceptable to me. Got to watch those duty cycles and have fun.

That's serious man!

Just want to make sure what diode... BDR-203 8X?

This means that a version 4 FlexDrive can handle the 8X at 360mA's...

Nice!

It is the BDR-203 diode. Yes, the flexdrive is doing well, it even has more adjustment in it but I do not want to kill the diode just yet. Maybe when the BDR-203 drop to under $100 but not now.

The reason I asked, is because with a BDR 8X diode, which has a high forward voltage, 300mA's was thought to be about max per Dr. Lava.

But you have shown that it holds steady with an 8X at 360mA's!

az92coupe, your Pocket Mini kit with 'Hot' option is shipping today. (Friday)

I have it set at 125mA's per our conversation.

Enjoy your build! :)

I bought another one of these hosts and the switch stopped working. I can't for the life of me unscrew the silver ring with my screwdriver. That thing is stuck. Any suggestions?

If you got it from me, send me the barrel and I'll fix it for you...

Or even if you didn't get it from me! PM me if you want to send it.

I'm very new to all this stuff, and honestly its a bit overwhelming with so many kits, options, etc!

My goal is to build a slick fuse lighter for fireworks.. I've read a ~225mw laser should do it, but not sure about the wavelength, I guess anything that's visible (~800nm?). What would be the easiest kit for a beginner? The green kit is only for low power, minimal heatsink so I think I can safely eliminate that kit.

Also I notice most kits call out for a AixiZ or Meridith Instruments Laser Module, which are a couple hundred dollars each! Perhaps I'm not shopping at the right website, but why are these laser modules so expensive when I can buy a brand new dvd burner (~225mw?) from newegg for $50?

Assuming I can't find a cheap module and instead remove the diode from a dvd burner, would the 405-G-1 glass lens or Meredith glass lens and ezfocus work for it? What about the Premounted flexdrive (mA?) Is using a dvd diode best left for the more expert hobbyist?

Thanks!
Ben

AixiZ is cheap, Meredith is expensive...

You can get plenty of burning power with an AixiZ acrylic lens. I would recommend starting out with an open can red build, or a PHR blu-ray.

You can get the diodes pre-mounted in AixiZ modules from a couple of sellers. One that I know of is Kendall:
Lasers : High Tech DealZ, Simplifying the LASER Hobby!

If you got the diode pre-mounted in an AixiZ module, then all you would need is my kit with 'Hot' option. And I can set the current, depending on which diode you get.

See this post for what will be needed on your part to complete the assembly with the 'Hot' option:
http://laserpointerforums.com/f39/fs-pocket-mini-build-kit-easy-assembly-22537-5.html#post479406

You could go with one of my glass lens modifications for more power, but if it is just for lighting fuses, you would be just fine with the AixiZ acrylic lens.

Focus is the key to burning. And you have to have a very steady hand, or rest the laser on something solid.

At 5' distance, it should be very easy. An open can red build at 420mA's would light a black tipped match at 20' if focused properly. Even with an AixiZ acrylic lens!

enliteneer, I shipped your Pocket Mini Kit with 'Hot' option and Meredith glass lens mod today. (Thursday)

I set the driver to 395mA's. (red test load) It was as close to 390 that I could get. Sometimes the FlexDrives are 'touchy' at certain ranges.

Hope your build goes well! :)
