Should there be a "save draft" option for writing new threads?

Let the vote decide , then Admin can add this if possible- if not--we are still at the same place no foul no harm..I dont always plan a long post or thread --they seem to have a life of their own and grow larger than planned- when I lose them(often) the do-over is not as good.. & sometimes I just give up...

btw IMHO those who now use their tiny phone as a PC should not bitch about those who do not and want to leave more than a few words.

just sayin'

For the love of thor yes. I have lost so many posts to the "brb maintenance" message that I want to club a baby seal when it happens.

Only question is how you would access drafts. Is there a place for them?

As I mentioned, vbulletin(even older versions) allow you to create a section for this purpose
1. Threads in this section have no editing restrictions, you can edit or delete posts
2. Only the mods and thread starters can view threads. Invisible to all other members
3. Once thread is done, thread starter can move it to section of choice?

Very useful on forums I visit.
1. Use it to compose multi plage travelogues
2. Use it to compose long review threads spanning multiple posts

Actually newer versions of vbulletin (vB4+) includes the save draft feature and it has been imported to the older vB3.

What I typically do is not even do it in Notepad. Every once in awhile I highlight all that I have written and ctrl-c. I don't have to ctrl-v it anywhere unless the unwanted happens and my interwebs shut down. It stays on your clipboard until you copy something else or shut off your computer. I also ctrl-c everything before I submit so that if a maintenance period is active, I have it copied and ready for when maintenance is over.

Frankly, if your computer crashes, maybe it is a sign not to post whatever you were going to post.

LPF isn't running the latest version of vBulletin?!

With all the downtime for maintenance, donations, and ad revenue, you'd think we'd at least be running the latest software.

Unfortunately, LPF is still running the old vB3, I'd like to see vB5 on LPF.

Well dang. Yeah, that'd certainly be nice.

I'm sure the latest versions are more secure, too. I wonder why Avery hasn't upgraded, since he's so security-oriented...

Maybe it would be difficult to transfer everything over. Last time there was a big software change apparently there was chaos and anarchy in the UK. So maybe it is just more trouble than he is ready to handle at the current moment

The last changeover was from YaBB to vBulletin. Fortunately, it's much, much easier to upgrade within vBulletin.

I don't think anyone would ever upgrade if it were that difficult. :p

I talked to him a while ago about upgrading but he thinks the older one are more secure :undecided:. Hopefully he will reconsider it.

Ok I got a reply from Avery, unfortunately its a no go. :(

Here's what he said:

Yeah unfortunately this isn't really possible. I don't think vbulletin has such a feature and i generally avoid making code modification b/c it can break things.

my advice would be for people to periodically copy/paste their post message

Oh well, it was worth a shot. Thanks to all who voted and/or commented!
