-Don't knock me but I'm starting to enjoy this...

Am I missing something somewhere ? (Maybe it was part of the deleted thread.)
I can't see where this forum is being used as a business.
It may be getting to the size and require the time of a business but it doesn't quite meet the definition.

I think that a lot of the “down-time” lately has been, in part, due to the site's own success. There has been enormous growth and popularity over just he last few months since I created my account.
The membership are INDEED the main part of the reason for that. The interactive access to the knowledge base and the way in which most members respond is the best part. Even just reading some of the “debates” can be quite entertaining.
Sure the forum isn't perfect. It never will be ! It's how you deal with the imperfections that says things about your character..

But I can't see where Avery is trying to make a “profit” from all this. What am I missing ?
He limits the ads. (Do you ever `click' through them to generate `hits' from LPF for revenue. That's how they work.) He monitors all new accounts/IPs for nefarious activities. He does the upkeeping. He even finds time to comment on some things once in a while.
Is it his fault that the money-grubbing company Apple charges an outrageous fee for running an “App” on their system ? How would you recoup the charges for those who are Apple dependent ?

BTW. I don't have any mobile platform. Not even a cell phone. Maybe a laptop soon but I have no interest in any of those other things yet.

So why are people getting offended ?
Do you require an itemized accounting of all that he does and the associated costs ?
What makes you think that you are entitled to that information ?

I'm just happy to learn new things, see lots of pictures, experience some laughs, (No. Not AT you, WITH you. Yeah. That's it...) and hunker down for some good argu...debating.

Some of us have. :tsk:

Scroll to the bottom of the first page.
LPF is about to cross the 20,000 member mark
We have >4,000 "guests" visit the forum in any given 12 hour period
I run through >25 new accounts being registered every day (~5 of them are SPAMMERS ;) )

When your forum approaches those numbers, I hope you will have figured out a better way to deal with the work and cost associated with running your forum.
We are basically learning by doing here :banned:
So far, it's worked pretty well ;)

Attributing everything to essentially "growing pains" doesn't really work though. Obviously there is a level of discontent here, otherwise this thread would not exist.

A big part of it seems to be that help is being offered but turned away.

A few more mods would go a long way to reducing the load on you and on Avery, but that does mean giving up a measure of control.

if some of "us" have, then why are some of "you" here? :na:

It takes time to rise to the top of google, part of what makes this forum fun is the number of people on here. There is also a massive amount of information here.

There is quite a few mods, Dave just... well he does it all (and I must admit TOO MUCH some times)

We have Phoenix77, Daguin, Things, and Spyrorocks.

Compare that vs the number of mods on the "other" forum and the number of people and you can see how there is room for improvement here though.

One supervisor and 4 mods for 20000 people... kind of lopsided no?

Edit: It does often seem like Dave does the lion's share of moderating, and 95% of the time I think he does an amazing job.

Yeah, but you can't really say we have 20,000 people.... Think of how many are actually ACTIVE here. :banned:

You guys are lucky, If avery didn't created this forum you will be still using lasercommunity.

And what is wrong with making profit from site that I spend tons of hours on it?
Go try to run a huge community like this, It's gonna burn a huge hole in your wallet.

Avery are barely makin profit of LPF, You need to try my friend which he squeezes at least $1k monthly of his community.

LOL You can probably run this place EXACTLY how its ran off what he gets from the Ads alone.... its like his birthday gift for the donations :bday:
;)

I'm not saying its /wrong/ I'm just saying thats how it is... TBH I'm not entirely sure how we got on this topic in the first place o_O

what help is being offered? oh this help..."stop the ads, take away the donations, don't have a monthly fee, and stop all the maintenace"

the way LPF is now is the way it has always been, minus the mods. people come and go. as bad as you think LPF is, me and others think is that great.

what are you going to do at another laser site? it's not like contribute much to the laser hobbyist community anyways. most of your posts are your opinion of old LPF drama and new LPF drama.
