It's a form 5106 for importing stuff, they sent it as an adobe file, so I can email it to those interested, or you can likely find it online in a .gov website. They will want my ss # and the inf. they surely already have, but it is not too big a deal. The lasers are in Alaska so, they were not coming today if I already had the paper in before. I am anxious as well folks, so i will get it ASAP! -Glenn

Alaska isn't really "on top" of Canada, it's on the western edge.  And I'm sure the air temperature isn't a problem, they're probably in one of the bigger cities in the south half of Alaska, and indoors, not outside.

As far as why there, you should look up something called a "great circle".  People think of the world as being on a 2-D map, so looking at at it that way, the shortest path from China to the US would be a straight line through the middle of the Pacific, almost crossing Hawaii, right?  The problem with that is we don't live on a flat earth, we live on a sphere, and the shortest distance between any 2 points on a sphere never shows up as a line on a 2-D map, the shortest distance between 2 points on a sphere is something called a "great circle".

A great circle is a circle around the surface of a sphere that is the always the longest circumference of the sphere.  Like the equator: the equator is the most commonly-known great circle on earth. All lines of longitude are also on great circles (a line of longitude is technically half of a great circle, they don't go all the way around). By contrast, a line of latitude is NOT a great circle, since they are circles that are not the circumference of the maximum circumference of the earth; the equator is the only line of latitude that is a great circle.

So if you go get an actual globe, and draw a great circle between China and the western United States, you'll probably see exactly why the shipment would be in Alaska while on its way from China to Los Angeles.

Actually, nevermind, here's a great circle mapping website, with a great circle drawn from Beijing, China to Los Angeles, USA: http://gc.kls2.com/cgi-bin/gc?PATH=...=kts&RANGE-STYLE=best&RANGE-COLOR=&MAP-STYLE=.  The red line on that map is the shortest path between those 2 cities, and it crosses Alaska, not too far from Anchorage.

Flying on a great circle IS flying straight when you're flying across a sphere.  Seriously, get a globe and play with it.  Draw a line on a 2-D flat map, and then look at that same path on the globe, and you'll see that the line that is straight on a map is NEVER a straight line when going across the surface of a sphere.

And who said anything about crossing Europe? :-?  Here's the map of the shortest path between Beijing and Los Angeles, and there's no Europe in it :

 thats cool. I measured the route on my globe and its much shorter to go through Alaska than to take a "straight" line to L.A.

Ah i see... Thanks for letting us know :)

Kinda off topic, IF i would want to ship for example a flatscreen/plasma to eastern Europe, i would probably have to fill out few documents too, right? Also tax too? Or would it be simple just like any other package shipped in US.

I would think so, and there may be customs costs that I would look into as they could be significant.

Everyone, don't worry too much about customs on the CNI lasers,  If there are any charges, they are likely quite small charges.  Sorry if I worried you folks!  -Glenn

Yes you would have to fill out customs forms provided by the US postal service (or UPS/FedEx other private carrier). You wouldn't have to pay any tax to export, but your recipient might in order to import the item. From my Ebay experience, anything over $150 or so (depending on the country) is liable to get hit with an import tax. I have had some customers get really mad at me because of this, but I don't make these regulations, of course.

Best thing to do is to declare the item a gift (there's a place on the customs for to mark that) and try to undershoot the value (unless you insure it - then you have to declare on the package the full value in order to get the insurance), within reason. If the tv is brand new in its original packaging it will be harder to do that, but not if it's used.

But back to my anticipated laser - I was sooooo hoping Glen would get it today... if that were the case then I would have it sometime next week. Oh well, we've been waiting a long time - won't hurt to wait a little longer! At least the lasers are in the US now.

They are Here!  Testing is underway!  so far, PBD, you have a Blue to die for, 10- 14 mW!  and the yellow is very nice too, 3-4 mW peak on my meter!   Back to more testing...
It's all good news except for poor Schrecken_Licht  who will need to RMA the 635 nm doing a 1-3 mW
(On my Kenometer) Results:
Vlad_13  100 mW  155 - 208 mW   (uses 2x AA batteries )
Dark_Star 200 mW  245 - 275 mW    (Uses a 18650 battery)
ohada  500 mW  535 - 712 mW     (Uses a 18650 battery)
Pullbangdead  yellow pen 3-4 mW    (uses 2x AAA batteries )
Pullbangdead  Blue pen  10-14 mW  (CR2 battery , I tested w/ rechargeable CR2)
scopeguy20    yellow pen 3-4 mW    (uses 2x AAA batteries )
scopeguy20    200 mW  240- 290 mW    (uses 2x "C" batteries)
Rangedunits  1 key one locking tail cap for pen and 1 button  (none tested)
Sorry Schrecken_Licht!  I will contact CNI right away to get RMA  And so far there were no other costs or problems.
