Scared of my brother's laser..reasonable?

As other members have said we don't know what power output this laser has. Most of the laser pointers if you could safely call them that sold on line tend to be well over 5mW. If he got this for only 20 Euros I'd be very worried about IR leakage. I doubt it has a proper filter.

Get this thing away from him ASAP before someone goes blind.

My intention was to destroy it without him knowing someone broke it so he will think that they are just cheap junk and wont waste anymore money on them.I only say this as he obviously does not understand the damage they can cause if he is pointing them at people.
But if your mother knows about the laser ( i didnt want to get him in trouble) get her to read about them here on this forum and especially a topic from (sorry zoul) from a member that was hit in the eye by a falling laser that was more powerfull but it was falling not being pointed at people.

if it takes say 2 AA batteries then get an extra 2 or 3 or what ever batteries and fill the battery chamber up then lay the extra batteries in a line behind it without the back screwed on and then get a piece of wire and touch the back of the last battery and touch the other end of the wire to the pointer case where the back would screw on and this would kill the driver and or the diode.

I would either overheat it or throw it in some water, maybe even tape it on outside in the hot sun. I've personally never killed a laser by putting the batts in backwards, I'm lucky or it just doesn't happen often enough to trust it, since he doesn't know much about it he probably did it himself.

To break it with out him knowing just shock it a few times with a BBQ ignitor, you know the red button on the BBQ. The shock will kill the driver/diode with no visible damage.

It would probably be better if your brother were to learn the dangers and become a safety nut regarding them, but at age 13 that might be a real chore. A problem too is that even if you break the laser, he might want to buy another to replace it. Hopefully he'll lose interest.

I'd avoid any physical damage if you can help it. That way when it breaks your brother will figure it was just a crappy overpowered laser that burned itself out. The reverse battery trick might work, but it doesn't, you can try frying it with too much voltage from a high voltage battery or multiple lower voltage batteries. For example:



You string together the batteries end-to-end, and with a wire connect it back to the case of the host, completing the connection. That'll produce about twice as much voltage as the pointer usually needs/wants--which can help fry the pointer when you hold the button long enough. Make sure to point it at a surface that isn't very reflective. It may also take some time before it burns out. Oh, and remember to replace the batteries as if it were never touched in the first place.

Who would've thought we'd be advising on how to properly fry a laser? I guess we're experts in that too.
