they have a different current draw you. and you need to be a specific as possible with the phr's cuz the are sensitive. go to www.rog8811.com and look for dummy load.

One advantage of a real test load is that it has a large power resistor that you can measure the voltage on, instead of connecting your multimeter in-line. Many multimeters don't even go about 200mA, but their voltage measurements can definitely go above 200mV. Using a power resistor is also the correct way to measure current on a live configuration--not putting an ammeter inline with the laser diode.
As for your question, burnt-out laser diodes work as dummy loads. However, you should probably use the same type as the one you're going to be actually using.

It would be good if that dummy load had voltage drop similar to the diode that you want to power with this driver (it will be something about 5V in case of 405nm LDs). I think that four silicon diodes in series would be OK. You can also put a 1 ohm resistor in series with that diodes for current measurement (with 1 ohm you will get 1V/A) just like Bionic-Badger wrote.

6 silicon diodes for phr. 4 for red. each diode has a 0.7voltage drop.

From what I understand, 1N4001 diodes are the done thing. But a dummy load is better.
But if you happen to have some diodes and a 1ohm resistor sitting around (like I do =D), then that should work just fine.

Using 6pc 1N400X rectifier diodes and a 1 Ohm resistor in series is a Test Load
for Blu-Ray Laser Diodes.
Using 4pc 1N400X rectifier diodes and a 1 Ohm resistor in series is a Test Load
for Red Laser Diodes.
If you can't find 1 Ohm resistors for your Test Load... see here...
