Haha thank you all. But now i'm kind of sad because i think im gettting a bad one. i always bad luck. i hope it can atleast pop baloons

Don't feel bad... You got an inexpensive laser and you chose a good color! Green is the brightest color so even if your laser isn't a full 50mW (and it very well might be!) you will still probably have a bright laser that will be lots of fun.

Definitely let us know how it turns out!

Hi xplayca,

As you've see above your laser is already there.

I want to open the dialog about the "legality" surrounding laser pointers (LPs), in the USA.

I've been looking for actual "laws" making the buying or selling of laser pointers illegal, and I'm not finding any, not to be confused with regulations, and ordinances, which are not laws.

I don't think they, (LPs), are illegal, which is why the FDA is the entity that is regulating them, through their governance of devices that produce harmful emissions. Which is why I can't find any penalty for buying or selling them

Since the FDA has almost no power or enforcement, they are only able to decree these devices unsafe and have Customs seize them when they find them crossing the borders.

I have noticed that when we have a local incidence of someone pointing a laser at a airplane, the news casters reports about federal charges covering the harassment and endangerment of the planes and passengers, no mention of the use of illegal lasers.

Saying all that, we have a hobby that is interesting and makes us want to learn as much as we can about them, while having to endure the difficulties that come with a very small group of IDIOTS that are causing problems for the rest of us.

I wouldn't hesitate in calling the authority's if I witnessed the foolish use of a laser pointer.

So far, just my 2¢ .

There is a very recently signed law making it a federal offense to knowingly point a lp at an aircraft.

Basically what it comes down to is NEVER point a laser at, around, or in front of, people, cars, planes, helicopters, animals, etc,. In most cases unless there is a specif law against lasers, like for example in cape may county in nj, you may be asked to stop using a laser, but if you are over 18, polite, and weren't doing anything bad... you're not likely to get in trouble.

I would go a step further and say if you want to make sure that you will never have any problems other than your own safety use the laser in a controlled environment alone. Never use it in public and avoid the urge to show it off to friends. And never never let someone else use it no matter how much they press you. If they want to use one send them here to learn and build their own.

I have a lot of high powered lasers. But i live in Clearwater Beach, Florida. A good vacation spot. Lots and Lots of cops. So i only use it indoors. I don't even shine it in the sky, Big chance of a police officer seeing it and coming to have a "chat" (I live on the main road). :D plus a lot of airplanes fly overhead that's another reason I don't use it in the sky.

more often it is the act that is not legal rather than the laser-

cops do not carry LPMs-

40looks like 50 looks like 60--++

5mW can get you on hot water(trouble).. you will hopefully get bored with popping and burning and try he many other more interesting things you can do. Try Lumia, thats very easy and very nice to see,

gl when in doubt do not take it out.

Really? Fascinating. I would think that you don't necessarily control what is sent to you, so who knows? Maybe you didn't purchase it?

US. I remember the members name, but I cant find his post.

Anywhoo, from searching around I found you can be fined in 2 ways.

1. You receive the laser. Time goes by, you get a letter from customs saying you illegally imported a laser, and must send it back. You must provide proof the lasers was sent back. Refusal results in fines.

2. If you buy numerous lasers, and its caught by customs, you run the risk of being fined/jailed for importing with intent to sell contraband.

Moh only had an issue because because he created a web site.

I doubt they are worried about a bunch of hobbyists.
