I am wondering about the feasibility of a laser Gatling type setup. In my head I am picturing a Gatling gun but as it rotates it would emit a laser of cutting grade. Practical use? I have no freaking idea. But it would be cool… Turn in on and it would cut a “perfectly” round hole in something. Is this even a possibility?

Sorry if this has been suggested or if this comes across as dumb.

lol ummm. not too sure bout that one, there are lasers that are made to cut metal and such but they are huge, you would need alot of power and alot of expensive parts. It would be too big for a gatling gun. it would be even to big to lift by hand. But cool idea though lol

That would be the coolest weapon ever. But not too practical...generally they just use a single CO2 laser and cut a circle out. It's possible, just not practical. But oh man, a laser gatling would be one of the coolest things I've ever seen.

Do you mean a gatling type setup, with each barrels containing something like a ND,YAG rod, flashlamps and cavity ? ..... for have something like a "pulsed laser machinegun" ? ..... ;)

I think making one would be a blast. IE: non cutting one.
You could rig up a 9VDC power supply feeding 6 "barrels"
each a different color. Just resistor down each barrel (host) to the proper voltage. Mount 2 brass "wipers" on the ends of the hosts(+ &-). When you spin the barrels each host passes by a set of contacts that powers that colored laser. you could angle each one a little different, so when spun, you would get a 6 color circle projected on a wall.
Of course this wouldn't be cheap to build, but it would have a definite WOW factor
Not sure what else you could do with it. But as in many creations, once it's built, you come up with all kinds of uses and improvments for it.

Sounds like a cool idea... not too feasible though.

I think Greenmechanic's idea sounds awesome... but extremely expensive

Well, it would make for an excelent duty cycle if you were overdriving a diode, and it would be cool to have a ruby laser that kept on going if you could recharge it's capacitors while it was off of the firing position. But there is really no reason to spin the barrels around unless they shared a power supply, at which point it becomes pointless to use the multiple barrel design anyway unless you are concerned about heatsinking... Hmm it would be very cool, but I'll just stick with a regular gatling firing incendiary rounds :)

Meh, it's been covered hundreds of times before, we don't need a practical reason.

We have the choice as to what we spend out money on, and if we happen to find powerful light concentrated into thin beams fascinating, then what makes our hobby any different from someone who collects coins, or plays with model trains?

true. most of us don't really own lasers for a reason anyway.

exactly, that's pretty much what a hobby is... a pointless thing you spend money on that makes you happy. Hold on- does that mean drugs are a hobby?

I guess you could say that, but how many people screw total strangers for a laser? or mug old ladies to buy a model train? Lie to the people who love them most and betray them for a baseball card??

I know a guy who is in love with a chick who has a crack hobby...... I don't like her very much.

People have stolen the wedding rings off their own mothers hand at her funeral to buy drugs, I think that makes it a bit more than a hobby.

What if I screwed strangers, mug old ladies and steal stuff from my dead mother to buy lasers???
