Hi,
I'm kinda new to this forum and i haven't had time to introduce myself.Lasers became my hobby when i saw a laser pointer when i was 7, it struck me. I never really researched them until now, and i have made a lot of different types of lasers, including reds and blu-rays. So, the game that we are gonna be playing: You reply to this and tell me what your name is, where you were born, and what kind of lasers you have and what is your favorite one. Also tell us how many *suspenseful music* diodes you have killed, because that makes you a murderer! Get people to join in by PMing then and linking them to here.

My favorite laser is my red dorcy, and i have killed 4 diodes.

My name is Casey.
Was born and raised in So Cal. I currently live in Ontario.
I've always been a geek for electronics, physics, and overall cool technology. I've loved lasers since 1990 and that was when I first learned about LD's. 635nm at 5mW for $100 was my first few lasers.

Now I own:
RPL-225
PS3-DIY-405nm (http://www.laserpointerforums.com/forums/YaBB.pl?num=1206558192/15)
650nm, 50mW Sony 16x LD-DIY-Kipkay
650nm, <200mW Sony open-can (On the way-only need 7.4V NiMh in same host as my blu-ray)
DX 5 (X2)
Planning to build some unique different lasers......

I've killed many diodes, and destroyed two:
DX 808nm - killed 3 experimenting with other drivers ::)
PS# 405 - killed by my girlfriends ass (jk, she sat on it in my car turning it on until the 9v died, and had no driver only 100ohm resistor - Thanks Kipkay!)
Sony 16X - broke pins off one because I forgot I couldn't twist the housing :(
Sony 20X open can - bent it during extraction (1:2) :'(

That's all I can remember off the top of my head. Needless to say, my RPL is my favorite laser.

Well here goes. :-/
My name is na na(yea it probably sounds funny to you guys, heck it even sounds funny here).I was born and raised in Romania(Transylvania to be more specific, and probably sounds more familiar too). It's a POS 4th world country where most people are poor so unfortunately for me I haven't a lot of money for lasers.
My first laser was a $20 1mW 650nm keychain, about 10 years ago when they were pretty rare here.
As I said before, I don't have a lot of money for lasers , so my whole laser collection is my red diy housed in an aluminium barrel I made and a DX30 that just left HK(so I haven't got it yet).So yea, my favorite laser is my dvd laser :p
I only heard of burning lasers from the kipkay video 8 months ago.Until then I thought you need a much higher power to actually start smoking stuff.I built my laser right after I saw the kipkay vid.Ripped out a DVD burner and a cheap red keychain for the lens (couldn't wait to order from aixiz) I made my own module, and made my case so it will fit the module, switch and batteries. It was only later that I found out about this forum , so it's unregulated but still works after 8 months.

I think there is a special feeling reserved for when you extract the diode out of a burner, PS3 sled, etc. only to find it dead. I don't know what that feeling is called but i sure hate it ;D

Indeed there is. As with every project, a success can be self-gratifying for days, and a failure can be irritating, aggravating, annoying, disappointing, and costly. $30 down the drain.

It was about 3 months ago, after falling to kipkay's evil plan's. I built a 16x minimag laser, and i got hooked! It worked perfectly and burned like hell, so i figure "why don't i build an invisible laser". Than, i looked up "invisible laser" and found that they are IR lasers, and i found a website called snochina.com where they sold them. I bought the 200mW IR Diode for $50 and waited for it to arrive.... 2 weeks later, i get it in the mail! Oh boy, time to install it! So i quickly put it in the AixiZ module and plugged it in the minimag, BIG MISTAKE! At first, it was a very dim red light, i focused it on my table and it smoked. Then, i heard a sizzling sound, and no more light. I thought "oh sh**" and took out the diode and touched it, it burned my freaking finger, and the plastic inside the minimag was melted. So, i email the guy on snochina.com and tell him that his diode was defective. He replies with "no, it wasn't". So i tell him if i don't get a new diode than i will take legal action. I get another one in the mail. Except that time, i decide to do more research because i didn't know crap about lasers, and i found this forum, which made me the laser hobbyist i am today *sob*. Thank you very much... lol

*mumbles* Should've been a story teller... ;D

Hi Everybody! This is Phoenix77/akaROB. I got hooked on lasers just last year so I'm still a noob. Unfortunately the place I got hooked was at W.L. along with their Forum. I wish I had done some research & found THIS Forum, & the better laser mfgrs. I live in INDIANA, & have a wife & 19yo son. I'm a high school grad. with 1& 1/2 yrs. of college, at a Chemical Tech. Major. but lost interest. So here I am,36 yrs. later havin' fun & learning about lasers. The END

Lol, you gave it too much voltage probably.IR diodes usually run on lower voltages than the red ones. But if he sent you another one, it wasn't all down the drain.
Oh and I forgot to mention, the only diode I killed was the 790nm in the DVD burner, pretty much the same way you killed your 200mW one ;D But didn't really care about it, I was just experimenting.Didn't want an invisible laser without proper protection.

Wow, dude, your son is the same age as me ;D

No, i found the data sheet a couple weeks ago, and it runs on 2.4 volts and 130mA, i gave it 3. I don't think it was the voltage that killed it...

I'm actually gonna make a Dorcy Jr. mod with this diode in a couple of days, i'm using a 10ohm resistor with a 47uF 16v cap. The dorcy has a boost circuit so it will make the 3v turn into 5v, but i think the resistor and cap can handle it. Because that is what everyone says.

My name is Bill Gilmour, 47 years old, and I live in Ontario, Canada. I became interested in lasers only last October when I was looking around on youtube about Tesla Coils (another hobby, I make them), took a wrong turn in youtube and wound up looking at laser videos. One of the videos somehow led me to this forum, I read the old postings and lurked for months before joining. I have part ownership in a small machine shop, so I can make whatever I want. I have killed 3 open cans, 4 closed can red, 1 808 nm 1 w
diode, 1 808 nm 2w c-mount (crushed on workbench). Also managed to annihilate a 25w 915 nm by applying ac (damn Jack Daniels ...).  Fun. Yes I own many laser goggles, was born with lousy eyesight, so I am particular about having goggles. Buy your goggles, then buy your laser.
Thanks to all who post here for their designs and inspiration. This forum rules !!!

Lasers I own :

2 x 100 mw red lab style lasers (made in case with 120v power supply)
1 x 150 mw 532 nm green lab laser (bought this one from China - Lanling)
1 x 5 mw     532 nm green pen laser from ebay but good (so far)
1 x 20   mw 405 nm blu ray lab laser ( made in case, runs off 12v wallwart feeding current regulator)
1 x blu ray PS3 diode in flashlight, 55 ma (diode threshold 33 ma, runs well at 75 ma, freak diode, burns !)
3 x red laser handheld DIY using good SenKat diodes, current regulated
1 x red open can 20x DVD laser built in flashlight with current regulator 2 x 16340 power
1 x red open can 20x DVD laser 420 ma built in self made machined aluminum housing 18650 power
1 x red open can 20x DVD laser 380 ma built in aluminum enclosure lab style 120vac plug in
1 x Dealextreme 200 mw red laser (actually 157 mw)
1 x 808 nm 1 w 2 x 18650 power handheld in self machined enclosure
1 x 808 nm 2 w 2 x 18650 power handheld in self machined enclosure
1 x 808 nm 2 w lab laser
1 x 635 nm HeNe 1 mw mini laser
1 x Coherent 808 nm 60w water cooled laser diode
1 x Coherent 808 nm 40 w laser diode
Many 5 mw keychain and pen style reds

Probably forgot some lasers ...

Actually voltage doesn't really matter as long as it is above the diode's lasing voltage. As an experiment I made a red laser (Using Senkat's first diodes) that runs at 200mA at 5v. It's the current that matters, and I have run that laser for hours at a time and it is still lasing fine.

You sure have a lot of lasers... How much would you charge for a mini tesla coil?
