I think we should have to have a license to have them if we are over 18. Then it shouldn't be illegal to use hpl in public. To get the license, you should have to pass a safety test and there should be a laser safety class if you can't pass the test. The only reason I say you have to be over 18 is because I'm 17 now and by the time they could pass a law about it, I would be 18 (40 more days). :yh: Also each laser should not have to be certified but they should each have a sticker stating their maximum power output. A background check would also be needed.

ElektroFreak, you are absolutely right and it is probably something that should not be a delay on. These days things move pretty quick and all it takes is another incident of some sort with a laser to cement into law a ban of the sort that will put a real cramp on our hobby. You know that for some reason there is an increase in the number of pilot reported laser flashes each year these and other incidents will reach a limit of no return sooner or later. Good job man!

I am new here so sorry to just jump in but I have noted this pass Dec when trying to get any Laser pointers over 5mw I was blocked by at lease on one popular site but not by another and they both use paypal .. The FDA suggested ban isn't a law(yet) it as I can not find laws on the books and many of my police friend have I have asked if there was law they said no and that as long at I am not pointing it to or at a plan or trying to blind a drivers they are ok with me have 50mw laser in my pocket.

I only got the lasers to see if I could use them to see if a 50mw was hot enough to melt wax for my sculpture work . I had one from Radio shack that could but the circuit board solider points broke after it was dropped out of my pocket.. I open and can fix it but just never have the time . I went shopping on eBay and found this nice bright 5mw that is Green and it started to have problem the same day and the guy replaced it with out me having to return it .the new one works fine. its brighter than the 50mw green The replacement 5mw s isn't as bright but it is good and bright.

Ok that is part of my back ground in the current laser use my pass is I work with people using laser for light shows to making holograms to make high Military grade and for weapons and for lab use. I worked in electronics since I was 6 years old I am 50 now (would make Tesla coils to shock my friend and just be show off to them) I remember when HeNeon Laser sold in Edmund's Scientific catalog for few hundred to $1,500 now they sell at $4k up on eBay. I work with computers security work now and I am also an artist I work in lost wax sculpture and having Laser that let you burn and melt wax to do my work with out and open flame or some candle to heat tool is great but now we are looking at legal issues .. we are looking at something that has happen for year now becoming a threat because some idiot Adult or Minor is pointing them at Plans and Police . The other problem is Green is the new Red.. the Military is big on Green for targeting and so homeland people are not happy to find people buying lot 1000 on eBay green military grade green laser 5mw or higher.. So we are now we are seeing knee jerk reaction to people buying the toy laser vs the real ones and the real ones being sold like they were toys.. It like the kid who wants the BB gun for X-mas and the parents telling him all the time no kid you'll put your eye out... We're being told "Now we going to make a law for that .. and you can't stop us".. Ok well then so here we are the hobble and professionals who use laser and collect them we know the hazard of what can happen.. but they don't care .the paranoia but has bitten them..
We have pilots getting hit in the cockpits we have police heliotropes getting hit by dumb a$$ yes that is bad. Do we really need to regulate how and who has a laser of any power?...NO but yes something has to be done and the best way I can think of is to educate law makers .. Don't blanket email them but go see them the local and the ones in DC in if you are in the US but do talk to them and their staff.. Education of laser is need..As for out side the US you have to do the same .. The best way to educate people is to start clubs .. find ways to educate the public with demos and to make sure people know what a laser is and what it can and can not do... As I see it something fast needs to be done as everyday I seeing new ordering rules and blocks .. The FDA is saying if you have a laser over 5mw you should or better need to dispose of it .translation of this means they are going to make a laws banning and saying we are going take your laser and put you butt in Jail for having it .. It tells me they will be on the forum soon tell us that the lasers we have need to be turn in to them or be file or got to jail or both. and yes they will go to to see who order what from all the good sites we get our lasers from.. The US isn't the same and paranoia rules over common scene.. I can see there being age check or something but to ban something that has a real uses and a reason for having is wrong ..
I still need to hunt for a better pointer as the 2 50mw and the 20mw don't do what thought they would and not going to pot them as i don't have meter calibrate the pot out put(you attach the meter and put a low current through the circuit and note the power gain with the meter as you adjust it. Then you calculate the power out put from what you were using as they full power source this way you do not over power emitters) I hate that I will have to use some other way to order a laser I want and spend tons more to ship one to me with out being blocked . It not like I want to buy a death ray or want to do harm to anyone I just want to be able to use it as a tool as it was intended for not some toy to blind people or pop balloons then again when I was young as I said I did make Tesla coils to zap people and show off so I guess it kind of the same with these lasers on the market now .. but then again no one banning the making of a Tesla coil are they ?

I hope some thing is done to curve this reaction by the FDA as yes laser in the wrong hands hurt people that's the same for guns and knives but none of those have been banned to us having only BB guns and Sharpe sticks. Ban and restrict tools that are use daily is wrong and to fight it is the only thing we can do but lets us do it with the idea that we are going to have an up hill battle with those pushing to take the tools away. No battle worth fighting is going to be easy and you have to take the first steps in making sure those being pushed have all the facts and this forum has the number to do that.
Letter REAL ONES and Emails phone calls all make for the first steps .. you have to get those who are signing on to making laws aware of all the facts .. and I think this would be the best for use to start on this as soon as we can.

Ok that just my view of things .. hope its clear .. writing on the fly here

EDIT: Even if people are educated about laser safety, it won't stop many people from shining them at planes or vehicles.
If you go to Welcome to O-Like.com, Your source for laser products you can get lasers for $5 shipping for one or $8 for flat rate shipping and it will take 2-3 weeks to get to you. I have not had a problem with any product getting through customs and they have pretty cheap prices on lasers too.

ya I found the forum here after I had order .. would waited and got what wanted first time.. Its been years since I look at lasers and its but there looks to be good ones out there with good deals ..Now just have to wait for the funds to spare..
Ya you right there will always be some idiots..But if we make less of them it can help. At best if Law makers are made to understander the need for them we have a better chance of them not being blocked or banned.

Still checking out the site here and the deal people finding .. just looking at the rule for getting Laser and it seem to be only if you are getting from out site the US so far ..

thanks for the tip.

@ Elektrofreak and LSRFAQ. Please don't give up on what you are proposing. I am sure that many members here are not aware of this thread. I only just now found it. I think that you and some of the others who have posted here have come up with some good ideas. We need to get the word out farther to our community.
There could be many different ways an individual could contribute to this cause. If some-one could come up with a list of methods, (choices per say), and lay them out, it would make our end goal seem a lot more attainable to those who think that this is an insurmountable task. Some members might have time, some might have funds, some might have political connections, and so on to give to the cause.
I guess what I am saying is, there may be ways for all of us to contribute but some-one may not know it until they see it given to them as a list of options.

Just wondering, would it be worth me performing a small charity event in order to fund this cause?

^That is certainly a good idea, if executed properly.

It's awesome to see such an outpouring of support for these ideas. At this juncture what I think is really needed is for some people to step up and help with coordination, since my own hands are more than full lately with 2 jobs, family and life in general. Mostly I've created this thread as a place to discuss our options, and it is serving that purpose very well, but in order for there to be any real action, some people who really care a lot about this hobby will need to volunteer themselves for the job of coordinating real-world efforts toward this cause.

If people would like to submit names of those they consider suited to the task, that's fine and I would be more than willing to start a thread for that specific purpose. Once a list of potential candidates has been developed we can make a public poll to see who the top choices are. Then we ask the chosen people if they are willing to take on the job(s).

Odds are that the folks that we believe are best suited for said task will already have full plates; IE Elektrofreak-Daguin et al

Wouldn't it make more sense to ask them, then submit their names, then host the poll?

^Probably, but I wouldn't know who the community in general feels is qualified without asking the community in general.. I could guess who based on post count and rep etc, but I thought the best way to find out who the community feels would do well with this is to give everyone an opportunity to speak up.

A few of my cents;

On the matter of banning laser devices and pointers from entering a country: why is is that in a country like America lethal weapons like guns are legal, but lasers are considered more dangerous?

Is it because of the 'ease' of using them? Because when you abuse guns, a thing that happens everywhere, you probably will get a jailtime and/or you get a hefty fine. But when lasers are abused, everyone is talking about banning them. Or you ban the device, or you ban (aka punish) the people abusing them. The latter seems better suited for laser incidents.

I think it's an issue of respect - everyone respects a gun as something that is very dangerous. I think a lot of people have a hard time respecting an innocuous beam of light.

And that has to do with the fact that an innocuous beam of light won't make your head explode if it touches it the way a bullet will. Firearms are more dangerous than lasers, I doubt you'll find many people who disagree with that, but in the US we have a constitutional right to bear arms. We don't really have a right to bear lasers.

About choosing or voting first: Yeah... i guess. Maybe collect nominees, then ask them, then hold a vote.

But i think you missed Trevor's point. We all agree that guns are more dangerous than lasers, but that's taking only one factor into account.

Reference to this video: YouTube - Spartan 1watt blue laser vs Renee

Most people have seen 1mW pointers, the crappy red ones. They assume all handheld lasers go something like that. So they buy something with a bit more power and treat it the same way and hurt their eyes.
