WOOHOO i got my red GB diode working, and would you believe it, i tried using the little driver inside one of those laser crabs(the little 5mw laser shows), and IT WORKS!!!! it burns from a pretty far distance, and is really bright! i know its not running at high power, but it is very good at burning closeish, and with this driver, it should have a nice life on it! the little aixiz module gets warm after a couple of minutes, but it has a long enough duty cycle for me ATM, and may put it on a TEC and make a nice labby with it, since the driver still has all the motors and everything on it, so its pretty big! i think i will go pick up a nice project box and mount it in there? i'll get some pics later, i am having to much fun ATM :D THANKS GREG!!!! and that TEC was a nice surprise too :D

Awesome. Nothing like powering up your first red.

How many mA are you getting out of that 5mW driver ?? Sounds like you burned it out and you're getting full GO ;D That sure isnt 5 mW....

Re: YAY!! i finally got a working burning red!!!

i have no idea, but it does have a LM317 on the board, so it is regulating, as i can see no variations in beam strenght over periods of time, and it burns well, and hasn't blown yet, so it must be working well! on another note, the 5mw one had an additional driver board on the diode, so maybe it was regulating it for that diode?

ok i just read that it is running at 2.5V @ 110-120ma, nothing higher, nothing less, so it is regulating very well! what kind of power ouput can i expect with this input?
thanks

Guessing around 75mw's. Where did you get the LM317? How much voltage are you running into it?

Re: YAY!! i finally got a working burning red!!!

the LM317 is on the board with the rest of the stuff, as i said before, the drivers is on the same board as the rest of the dc motors and control electronics, and has no pot so not easy to adjust, BUT is i can find the resistor between the dj and output pins, i may be able to switch it. but this output seems higher than 75mw????

The 75mw output corresponds with Hemlock Mike's and Daedal's graphs, given the current you measured... :p

Re: YAY!! i finally got a working burning red!!!

well if i find the resistor, what do you think i should replace it with for abit more power? it might be abit more complicated then that, but i will have a look!

Re: YAY!! i finally got a working burning red!!!

To calculate the resistance needed, take the sense voltage which is 1.25 volts (between the output and adjust) and divide it by the current. So for example 1.25 volts divided by .250ma's = 5 ohms. This will give you around 160mw's.

Re: YAY!! i finally got a working burning red!!!

would 160mw require a TEC, or just a heatsink?
thanks

Re: YAY!! i finally got a working burning red!!!

Things, a heatsink will be fine as long as you don't run long duty cycles and let the diode get hot. I do know however that a TEC will keep the output stable and you will get a few more mw's output. As the diode heats up, the power drops. It just depends on what you want to do. And don't freeze the diode.. ;D Condensation is a killer. Run it just a bit cooler than room temp. and you will be fine.

Re: YAY!! i finally got a working burning red!!!

ok i found a resistor that is between the adj and output pins, and it is 200ohms, does this sound right?? is it possible to do that sum backwards and find out how many ohms the resistor is now, since there is over 30 resistors on the board, and tracing the tracks are not easy.
