Do you trust DIY lasers?

I know this is a sensitive topic, so I hope I don't get flamed too much for it.

It seems that people generally buy lasers from two main sources: companies and personal sellers. Whether you buy from a company or an individual seller, there are advantages to both:

Companies

1. Products have higher quality
2. You are entitled to customer support and warranty
3. It's easier to find reviews (because companies sell products better than individual sellers)

Personal sellers

1. Lower prices
2. Greater availability for certain products
3. You can haggle for even lower prices
4. Easier to get custom lasers

In general, products from companies are of higher quality since they are usually made on manufacturing equipment. Of course, this does not mean it's impossible to make DIY lasers of high quality. However, potential buyers who aren't familiar with people like IgorT or Jayrob may think, "Why the heck would I want to buy a homemade laser from some random person on the Internet? I think I'll stick to the professionals."

One major advantage of buying from an DIY seller is that you can get lasers that are not available in the mainstream market. In many cases, a DIY laser is cheaper as well. For example, Wicked sells a 90 mW Blu-Ray laser for $2,000, but it is possible to get a 150 mW one from IgorT for just $250!

While buying lasers from individual sellers can be risk, it is safe if you know who you're buying them from. That having been said, would you buy a laser from an individual seller?

I would if I had the money, but I don't think my parents would approve of it. ;D

aren't most of the things people buy from other users on here DIY? or at least parts for a DIY

i would trust a DIY made from someone on here more than i would trust a website, the people who make their own lasers on here really do grade A work, really top notch

Looking at DIY lasers I have to say they are higher quality than a lot of off the shelf lasers like DX sells.

idk if they're necessarily better (you never really know what your going to get from DX), but at least the DIY lasers are tested and carefully hand crafted

Having bought DIY lasers from at least 5 forum members, I have found they are at least as good as the ones from companies, and several have proved sturdier and more lasting as well as more often in the expected power specs.

BTW, again thanks:

scope got a laser from just about everyone but me. :'(

That's it, I'm no longer going to be building lasers... (not unless I'm alone or with someone) :D

Yes, I have a tutorial on the build for those who want to DIY. In which case, I can just sell the heatsink. But that thread that I linked is the for sale thread.

There are options for the build though. You can get an open can red, or a blu-ray. Either one has options for AixiZ or Meredith modules. You do have to take a minute to read the long first post. It's all there though...

Well I like to DIY myself everything that I can, and buy the rest. It's cooler if you make it yourself , and ends up being cheaper.I bought the lavadrive because there was no way in hell I could've made such a good driver myself ;D Some builders here offer way higher trust, reputation, quality and warranty than some companies (like DX or KD, concerning lasers).

I think the general consensus is companies for DPSS lasers, personal sellers for blu-rays and opencan reds , DX for cheap powerfull red ;D , ebay + DIY work for gas lasers and highpowered IR.

Damn, I did a long well thought out post on this thread, when I sent it the site was in maintenance mode  main points were:-
There are good builders here who I would buy from if I couldn't build my own.
There are some ghastly quality builds that I would not touch with a barge pole.

Most if not all reputable diy-ers here do great builds. But there are a few that you hear that are slopped together. Either way, almost everybody makes some type of review.

You should've clicked back and copy-pasted that somewhere. :p

Thing is, very rarely do personal seller sell the same stuff as companies.I can't say which I prefer because they don't sell the same stuff. The only competition is with the DX dilda and diy reds(I think the dilda really made prices and sales drop on diy reds).WL's pulsar and sonar doesn't even need to be taken into account. :p
