Where Can I Buy 5mw Infrared Lasers?

You are correct, that 5mW @ 780nm-1066nm(NIR/IR) is what most of them used, however, we have several of these devices that we use on the horse farm and I've done quite a bit of research on them and I can tell you that the older models indeed used 5mW but what they would do is group them together into say 20 LD's to get 100mW of combined energy. The more recent models use LD's at a much higher mW's to accomplish the same thing in less time...If you study this you will notice that it operates at 10000mW. That's why I indicated that you would accomplish the same thing useing a higher mW LD at NIR(780nm)...Actually anything in the NIR/IR of 780nm to 980nm is preferred for the deep penatration. Zirdo

Thanks Zirdo. You are correct that many laser therapy devices combine multiple lasers in a cluster. But I thought that was only to increase the treatment area, not the power? I read somewhere that power >5mW does not penetrate the skin well. But I'm open to your analysis.

Can you help me interpret the following spec's?

Maybe this short :rolleyes:explanation will clear things up a bit, I know all the talk of mW's, joules, nm....can all be a little confusing:

The amount of power of a cold laser is expressed in Milliwatts or mW, which translates primarily to length of treatment time and to a lesser extent, depth of penetration.

Penetration is primarily determined by the wavelength, which is measured in nanometers (nm).(THIS IS WHY THE NIR/IR RANGE SEEMS TO BE THE SWEET SPOT)

A 500 mW laser delivers the maximum amount of joules/cm2 of energy to a given point in the shortest possible time. (cm2 means centimeter squared, so this is area)(the amount of joules is what we're interested in)

For example many protocols call for the delivery of 6 joules/cm2 or energy per point.

A 500mW cold laser will deliver 6 joules/cm2 to a single point in 12 seconds.

A 250mW cold laser will deliver 6 joules/cm2 to a single point in 24 seconds.

A 50mW cold laser will deliver 6 joules/cm2 to a single point in 120 seconds (2 minutes).

A 5mW cold laser will deliver 6 joules/cm2 to a single point in 1200 seconds (20 minutes).

So from this you can see, the higher the mW you can get then the more joules you can deliver in a shorter time, and the wider the focus the more area can be treated at one time. This is why a lot of them can combine many low mW LD's to equal one high mW LD's

The host size and the type of batteries, also the power (usually). They should be called laser pen pointers and laser torch pointers, you get me?

Just look at the specs :D

Back to the topic, I still can't understand why you don't accept my idea. Unfocusing the 200mW laser from O-like will have the SAME effect than using a 5mW pointer. If still, you want only a 5mW dot, you just take a piece of paper and do a hole on it!

WOW, big bug here. Posts are being sorted by the local poster time lol, my posts are appearing above the last one!

I'm sure someone here will do the maths to tell you the exact diameter needed to make this...

Thanks Hallucynogenyc. So I can use the torch the same way I use a pointer? What is the mobile camera that would let me see the IR dot/circle?

I have an idea, it may sound stupid but they have IR gun sights for spec ops military, it can only be seen through electronics like night vision goggles, may not be in pen form but it's gonna be a way lower power than 200mW, if you're really worried about that. Also this place has them as low as 100mW, and this page talks about them being used for acupuncture; Laser Pointers - 808nm Infrared Laser Pointers by SKYlasers

anyone know where to get IR gun sights then?

Exactly. It's IR laser light, you don't need to care where does it come from ;) IR is invisible to our eyes, but not to digital cameras. Try to look trough a digital camera at a remote control while pressing buttons. yeah, that's IR ;)

I decided to buy the 200mw focusable laser from O-like. Thanks Hallucynogenyc and everyone else here who posted answers to my questions.
