Seems like a really nice idea to me. I really wish I had a use for one of them, but

1) I don't have IR glasses (yet!)
2) I'm terrified of the 400mw IR pointer I do have and I would never even turn on a 2W one, glasses or not. :D My pointer hardly ever gets used (lack of glasses). I got it because it was cheap, and every collection needs at least one IR, right?
3) I have zero idea how to mount or focus one of these things.

Will ship tomorrow morning :)

To clarify - I have more than just one, so this thread is still active.

Was having trouble sleeping tonight, so I just went through and actually tested each individual diode with 1,000 mA of current. It's actually not as hard as I thought to check that each one lases, as long as I just give it the current for a half second to see if it lases. The diodes don't even get hot in half a second, so my initial concern that I couldn't test these without some sort of heatsink may have been a little silly.

All of this particular batch checked-out. They all lase with 1,000mA of current.

Still have some - yes.

Are they used? I don't know. I would just have a personal ethics challenge in calling them "new" since I have no datasheet for them, and given their roundabout history.

I looked at some of your other posts, and noticed that you're looking to build a DPSS laser.

I wouldn't recommend my diodes for that. We don't know enough about these diodes, and specifically, about their exact wavelength. They're labelled 808nm, but I don't have a datasheet to give us the +/-.

For DPSS, you need to know that your wavelength isn't, say, 801nm, or 817nm, etc.

thank you keep that in mind
