Hey LPF! I joined back in 2010 when I was in college. Tried to build a burning laser on a budget with some buddies with some success (after ruining a couple of diodes). Jayrob gave us some much needed help. Thanks jayrob! Took a little break from the laser building for a few years (school, broke and work) but I've been recently getting back into it (much to the annoyance of the wife).

I already have an Eagle Pair (OD4+ I believe) so I should be good on safety. The only working laser I have currently is one of the cheap Sanwu 304's 405nm 100mW. But I have a 2W 445nm M140 on its way with the host/driver/batteries ready to go!

Anyway, you'll probably see me around asking questions and stuff :D

Welcome back.

Grab a NDB7875 while there still some around in new condition, they are great diodes and really nice with a swanu 3X beam expander, use a sanwu G7 primary along with the 3XBE for the win.

Welcome back, aclarke!

Be sure and take advantage of the "custom search" bar at the bottom of the page, there is tons of laser related info. to be found there.

Welcome back. I see you made the account, but failed to post until today. Lots more to choose from now.

Would you recommend it over the M140?

I already have an adjustable current driver up to 1.8A. Looks like this driver wouldn't be able to push it to its max (after some quick Googling), but if you recommend it over the M140, I can get that one instead. I actually haven't pulled the trigger on the M140 just yet.

Welcome!

It’s good that you have safety glasses, just make sure they’re coated for whatever wavelength you’re using.

Enjoy yourself, and stay safe

Welcome back to the future.

Enjoy LPF 2018. LPF has grown and so has the database. Laser technologies have advanced quite a bit, as well.

I believe the divergance is the same between the two?
Since the max for the M140 is recomended at 1.8A and the 7875 at 2.4A, I would choose the 7875 and not push it as hard at 1.8A, should be the same output?
You can always push it harder later:)

welcome back,if you chose 7875 you will get more power under the hud which probably prefer it if you like to burn random stuff.7875 has same divergence as m140

Do you want to burn or look at the beam in the air ?

The M-140 is a 5.6mm and the 7875 is a 9mm, other than that it's basically 2w vs. 3w and the same 445nm color and same divergence, now if you want pretty to look at the M-462 is the same divergence but a brighter looking blue and it will burn about like the m-140, runs at 1.8a as well, the 7875 can take 2.4a

They are not expensive so I would get a M-462 and a NDB7875 and skip the 140 as the 7875 is the same other than package dia. and it's half again as strong.

If you like pretty maybe use your 1.8a driver with a M-462, it's a 5.6mm package.

The 140 and 7875 are both discontinued, and the osram PLTB450B can stand in for the M-140 so I would back burner it, actually the 7875 is better for about the same price so why buy a 140 at all, except your on hand driver, anyway 7875's will dry up at some point, and you want a unused one while you can get it, that's why I thought you might like it better.

Now if you want to save every penny the osram PLTB450B is less money and a slightly better divergence. 23 dollars vs. 34 for the m-140 and 50 for the 7875, m-462 is 50 dollars ( DTR's )

I've got to agree with Red and Alaskan on the M462, it's a much nicer looking wavelength and you'll be at approximately the same output ~2W.
I would keep it in mind for a future build, if you're going to be staying with the M140 for now.
The Solarforce T2 build in my sig. uses the M462, take a look at the very last pic, it's a good representation of the color IMO.
