Word is Orange/Yellow Spartan Coming Soon

Not sure if anyone saw my post in the 5mW thread, but it's something new so thought I'd bring it out in the open. After messaging Dragon Lasers about their new orange/yellow pen, they also added that:

"High powered orange laser in Spartan case is coming soon."

Oh yes! Sounds interesting, I really hope they can do something good with it. The better heat sink should help a lot compared to the pen, but I'm not sure exactly how high pwered they can go. I certainly wouldn't expect more than 5mW - 8mW.

But yeah, I did want one of the pens as the Vega is stupidly (but rightly) expensive. However I think holding out and seeing what this new Spartan might bring would be a good idea. I think it's guarenteed I'll be looking at at least $700 - $800, but being in the Spartan host would be so much better. Maybe not as stable as a batton host, but certainly more stable than a CNI pen.

Will look forward to see what comes of it...

I think 20mW would be pushing it a bit, unless there's been some dramatic change in technology.  I'm certainly not expecting that power, but 10mW max should be possible.  I guess we'll have to wait and see...

if CNI/LG cant make 10mw portable yellow, i doubt DL will be anywhere near a steady 8mw.
$7-800 for a yellow in the spartan body would be too good a deal but im guessing the price for this will be more near $1500.

The main problem is the inefficiency of yellow lasers. The best crystals are only around 1% efficient and the cheap ones are even worse. To get 20mw from a yellow portable you would need a 2Watt IR diode and good heatsinking to dissipate all of the heat from the 1.98watts of wasted IR. Don't expect to see a 20mw yellow portable for less than $1,500.
Yellow lasers simply aren't practical yet unless you absolutely want one for the novelty.

You can also add to the heat from 1.98W of wasted IR the 4-5W of heat created from the massive current draw of that diode. :
