Why use a dummy load?

I'm studying to become a computer engineer, and I ensure you once you start with semiconductors, you won't be so excited about them xD
 





I want you to tell me how you feel about them once you have done a couple of hours ;)
 
Once you get to their quirks you'll start some sort of love/hate relationship :)

Things don't always behave like textbook examples, the problem with the driver charliebruce mentioned is a good example too.
