Why is the aperture opening so large on DX lasers?

I just noticed that the aperture opening was Large in the pics (DX pen lasers)...like they drilled it larger or something lol. The same model (one i have) has an opening that is noticeably smaller.

Why is this? Different manufacturers?, but why the same exact laser?  ;)

There are lots of laser "clones" on dealextreme. All of them have slight variations. That's why there's the True 5mW and the not true one, both are from different manufacturers.

It's probably because of their poor quality, with the beam coming out at an angle so often. So instead of fixing it so the beam comes out the middle and doesn't hit the cap, they just make the hole bigger. ::)

According to rumors smaller holes = real true laser bigger hole = fake true laser.

Mine was a smaller hole opened it up it was new-wish (true laser).

It's to let all the IR out so that the power meters show a higher reading.

:-?

I think we're coming to the conclusion that it's because DX is so cheap, and does everything that could possibly done to a laser beam wrong (except making it zig-zag). ;D

I purchased DX SKU 91 in September and it had an extremely large aperture. However, it also has a very good driver and reports anywhere from 50-80mW on my photoelectric meter. Yes, it's ridiculously overpowered and was a total fluke. However, it runs on Ni-MH rechargeables without a problem, even though the combined voltage is typically around 2.4-2.6V.

I then purchased a few more as Christmas gifts for my family a few months later. Their aperture was much smaller, they put out far less power, and they would not run well on rechargeable batteries (i.e. the driver was definitely different).
