Why arent red lasers so powerful?

Once upon a time there were some C-Mount 650nm diodes with FAC rated for upto 5W, Few of the boys here got there hands on them, They were probably the 1st Single diode in the visible spectrum to be rated for the 5W mark???
Unfortunatly they didnt stick around long once LPF got there hands on them
Wish I got one while they lasted.....
