Whose laser pointers comply with FDA

Im a teacher, so Im freaked out by this report that said 90% of green laser pointers sold on the web are "not compliant" with FDA rules... I assume this doesn't apply to reputable companies (Z-Bolt, LaserGlow etc)... I found this one company that claims to guarantee compliance... LASER Classroom? Anyone know of them?
 





Well, you just have to know the FDA rules to judge for yourself if they're compliant or not.

They dictate that any laser above 5mW needs to have 5 safety points installed:
1) 5 second firing delay
2) Mechanical beam stop of some sort (shutter, usually)
3) Accurate warning sticker on the laser
4) Keyswitch
5) Safety pin (when removed, circuit is broken and you can't fire da laser)

All that done, and the product needs to be registered to have it's own import ascention number... or something like that. I'm on the other side of the world, I dunno the laws there :p

Companies you name, Z-bolt, Laserglow, I'd add Dragonlasers in here too, have FDA compliant lasers, as well as non-compliant ones.

1 of my 7 lasers are FDA compliant and even at that, it only meets 2 of the 5 requirements posted above; 1) safety pin, 2) accurate label **says under 200mW and it is :p **

most lasers members have here are built from scratch so its hard to add these safety features
 
So technically it's not FDA compliant.

Out of few dozen lasers that went through my hands though the years, number that was FDA compliant lies squarely at zero. But then again, my country doesn't have stupid laser import laws. It's falling apart instead.

Hey I had two Arctics, they are claimed FDA compliant but aren't. Does that count as one full laser (each was half FDA compliant)? :D
 
Yup my FDA compliant laser is a WL E2 and i only said FDA compliant since thats what the laser says. as well all know, thats just another one of WL's lies :p

Fully FDA compliant lasers are basically lasers that dont exist. ive never seen a laser with a 5 second delay on it
 
Please explain to me how these lasers (all from LaserBTB) are FDA compliant with the 5 requirements listed above (awillis i used your videos :p)

they dont have a 5 second delay

EDIT: they are labeled properly, have a safety lock, remote connector switch and aperture cover but they dont have a delay.....4 out of 5 isnt bad though

im pretty sure that a safety pin is enough here in the USA. im pretty sure local police dont study laser laws so they are more interested in learning than busting people for using them safely. i had a cop drive up my road two nights ago when i was using my laser and he just slowed down to look, didnt say a word. there have been many members here who have been "stopped" by the cops and all they say is whoa what is that thing. they are interested in learning

as long as you use your laser safely and smartly, i dont think the cops or anyone will bother you other than an occasional what is that thing?
 
I mean, given the *giant* volume of so-called "5mW" laser pens on eBay... none of which are even close to FDA compliant, I wouldn't worry too much. the 5 second delay, LG might have them on some models? I think I've heard that LG had a delay feature at some point... could be wrong though. Either way, I wouldn't worry too much about FDA compliancy... it's the *Food* and *Drug* Administration after all
 
The FDA screwed us all over with their laser laws:( but i mean its kinda a good thing that little kids can't easily get high powered blinding machines either..
 
not being FDA compliant is not really a big deal anyway, i feel that in many situations the safeties would get in the way of the use of the laser, though they do have uses in certain situations, the key for when kids are around, the label just to let you know how powerful it is.. the delay i i see no purpose for,, but in the end it comes down to the owner,, i can laze a jet just as easily with an FDA laser as with a regular one, it is my personal responsibility that is the best safety for the laser.
 
Agreed^. I think the delay is for a double check to make sure it's safe to activate the laser, but IMO that's not really necessary... the user should be well aware of the situation by the time they place a hand on the laser.
 
delay IMO is for you to look up and double check that the path of the laser is clear. things change from the time you put in the remote switch and turn the key, delays give you time to double check your surroundings. if something changed then your finger goes off the switch and no beam is ever uttered :p
 
Note that it is not against the rules to OWN a non-FDA approved laser, only to BUY, SELL, IMPORT, etc. pretty sure anyway. This really only matters when customs does an inspection on a package coming from overseas, like happened to me recently. buy from a builder from within the U.S. to completely avoid this problem
