what input voltage for DDL Driver?

I'm currently waiting for my parts to arrive to create the DDL Driver.
i read that you need to have a minimum of 6v to drive this driver & diode because the lm317 uses 3v and the diode ~3v, but is it possible to drive this with a 9v pp3 battery? because i have 8 9v pp3 batteries lying here doing nothing and it would be a waste of battery power if i don't use them.
i thought of connecting 3 batteries in parallel for more amps.

is this possible? or should i buy a few cr123 lithium batteries and place them in series for 7.2v?

3 X nine volt PP3`s in parallel would work fine for Blu ray (803T)... it may be that with a red the regulator will get warm as you will be getting rid of three extra volts, a small heatsink would sort that though.

i am using a red diode, so it works, great!
i'll rip off a heatsing from another device
